The United Kingdom European Union membership referendum, also known as the EU referendum within the UK, is a referendum that is planned to take place in the United Kingdom on 23 June 2016.Membership of the European Union (EU) has been a topic of contest in the United Kingdom since before the country joined the EEC, or the "Common Market, as it was famous then, in 1973.

The agreement with a Conservative Party manifesto promise, the legal basis for a referendum was recognized by the passage of the European Union Referendum (EUR) Act 2015 by the United Kingdom Parliament. It will be the second time the British voters has been asked to vote on the matter of EU membership; the first was held in 1975, on EEC associateship. Continued associateship was approved in that referendum by 67% of voters, but the nature of the EU has altered substantially since then and the result of this referendum is predictable to be extensively closer.

The 'fiscal compact' pact agreed at a current European Union summit could yet founder on the want for EU Referendum and on other legal delays in many participating countries. The pact is designed to develop financial discipline in the euro-zone by transferring better supervisory power over national financial plans to EU institutions.
