During the Holocaust, Jews were taking drastic measures to conceal their true identities. If they succeeded in living as a true Aryan, they could be spared the horrific destiny the others were to undoubtedly headed towards, a death camp.

Some survivors were also true Aryans who were able to hide the fact that they were Jewish. If no one knew they were Jewish, they would be able to live peacefully while no one questioned them. However if they were known Jews they would be killed no matter what they looked like. Jews would also send their children to the Aryan sides of the ghetto, as there was better living conditions there. Provided they had the money, parents would soon follow their children, however they were often deported before they had the chance. This lead to an mandatory payment of six months in advance for anyone who was sending their child to the other side. Your appearance was a huge factor in whether you could pull off pretending to be a non Jewish Aryan. Aryans were blond haired and blue eyed, if you were not this way, you would not be able to pull it off.

Children posing as Christians had to carefully conceal their Jewish identity from inquisitive neighbors, classmates, informers, blackmailers, and the police. Even a momentary lapse in language or behavior could expose the child, and the rescuer, to danger.

For Jews to pass as “Aryans,” it was essential to have false identity papers, which were often gained through contacts with the anti-Nazi resistance. Using forged or acquired papers, such as a birth or baptismal certificate, Jews sometimes could obtain legitimate documents under an assumed name from the authorities.
