Introduction

So… What do Chileans celebrate on the 18th of September?

In very simple terms, Chile was conquered by Spain during the 1500s, but on the 18th of September, in the year 1810, Chile officially became Republic of Chile (what actually happened was the people asked for a Junta, or Council, which proclaimed Chile a Republic).

This came to be due to many reasons, but the main reason was the dissatisfaction of the American colonies for the increase of taxes on behalf of Spain, as the only way of financing the House of Borbón.

Now instead of going into boring historical facts (although if you want more information, please go to the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chilean_Independence), I want this website to be  dedicated to what Chileans do in Sydney, Australia, to celebrate this historic occasion.

How can Chileans/Australians celebrate Chile’s National Day?

We can commemorate the date by going to public celebrations and mingling with other Chileans living here in Sydney, or celebrating privately at home.

I personally know of many families that prefer to celebrate in the privacy of their own home, by having a BBQ accompanied with Chilean dishes, salads and desserts, and of other families that prefer to celebrate with other Chilean families at public meetings (more details on page How to Celebrate).

Whatever the preference, the objective is ultimately the same: to remember the motherland and take pride of its many unique and wonderful traditions.

Viva Chile! (ie, Long Live Chile!)
