Various forms of electrical treatment have been performed on people throughout healthcare for years. I am sure a lot of you remember electro convulsive therapy or ECT performed routinely in the 1940's and 1950's for many psychiatric conditions, especially depression. If I remember correctly, they used electrical shock treatments to induce seizures while the patient was under anesthesia. Today they use less invasive forms of electrical treatment such as trans cranial magnetic stimulation and trans cranial electrical stimulation. Although studies have been done showing promising results, many insurance companies still are not convinced that some of these electrical treatments, many of which are less invasive and have less side effects, are as effective for conditions as the more mainstream treatment options. Many conditions such as chronic pain, depression, migraines, panic disorders, Parkinson’s, and mood or sleep disturbances have been helped using electrical treatments.

In recent news I have read several articles on using electrical treatments for brain tumors. In fact, a device was recently approved by the FDA for treating brain tumors. When using this newly approved device, electrodes are placed on the head or skull and they deliver low intensity alternating electrical fields to the brain. It appears the patient can wear this device while continuing his daily activities. This treatment seems to be available as an alternative to chemotherapy or can be done after all other treatment options have been exhausted. In the study that was done, the electrical field created by this new device causes the cancer cells to die before they are able to divide, leaving the healthy cells alone. The clinical study that was done seemed to help the patient maintain an improved quality of life.

There is also Calmare Therapy which was developed by a researcher and bioengineer from Italy, which offers another newer form of electrical treatment for pain.  It uses electrodes to transmit a "no pain" signal to the body erasing the "pain" signal creating an environment for the patient that is pain free. It works well for neuropathic pain and pain associated with cancer. There is also an approved device that has been on the market since 1991 which is a cranio stimulator that uses micro currents and radio frequencies to stimulate the brains production of serotonin, GABA and beta-endorphins and is used to help alleviate depression, insomnia, pain, and anxiety.

Electrical treatments are not only found in healthcare, they are also found in skin care such as electrolysis (generally done for the permanent removal of hair) and non-surgical face lifts. Electrical treatments for non-surgical face lifts use low electricity to stimulate the muscles in the face. This stimulation makes the muscles tighter and more toned in your face which helps diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles making your facial skin appear tighter and toned overall. There are also many wellness products that you can purchase for in home use that utilize various forms of electrical treatments. Several of these wellness products can be used on a daily basis. They offer varying forms of electrical treatments from high frequency, low voltage electrical treatments to muscle stimulation. Regardless of your thoughts, we will be seeing more electrical treatments in the future further embarking on the energy medicine.
