Practical Algebra: Building a Solar Powered Car/Webdesign for Newbies

Course Description:

In this course, students will be enriching their math and computer skills by participating in a two-part project that will involve building a solar powered car to learn practical applications of algebra. In the second part of the project, students will learn basic web design using html and using their web pages to inform the world about their cars, what they learned and how solar power can save the planet. In the math section, taught by Ken Fisher, students will build solar powered cars. The students will use the cars to discover the direct variation equation and the related equation of distance=velocity x time and the graphs from the data points collected in their experiments. Through the use of the solar powered cars students can determine distances traveled by plotting data points on the TI-84 graphing calculator and determine the best fit linear equation. In addition to the Algebra standards that are embedded in the project, students will learn about the possibilities and applications of green technologies such as solar power. In the second part of the course, taught by Matt Gold, students will learn basic html and use that knowledge to design simple web pages that will act as a reflection journal of their experience building the cars, studying solar power and applying algebra to real life situations. learning html is an excellent gateway for students who are interested in computer programming language that gets immediate results. In addition to the technological aspects of building web pages, students will also learn web design principles that will make their pages visually appealing and easy to navigate.
