About Imitrex Codeine in Q&A
What does fiorinal with codeine feel like? Can someone tell me what fiorinal and codeine feels like? I usually take vicodin when I get a severe migrain because thats the only thing that works!! I cant take topamox because it makes me forget and imitrex doesnt work! I have fiorinal without the codeine and it works ok but Ive heard that fiorinal with codeine is more effective!

deb s replied: "Vicodin has hydrocodone in it, and codeine in th fiorinal makes them both controlled substances. The hydrodocone is a stronger narcotic, but fiorinal is the med of choice for migraines, because of the compounded drugs and their action."

lynnyf1973 replied: "Fiorinal with codeine is stronger and will most likely work better by relaxing you."

Is Tylenol # 1 (acetaminophen with 8 mg codeine) available in Australia without a prescription? I am soon going to be visiting Australia for 4-6 weeks or so. I suffer from terrible migraine and take Imitrex. Sometimes, though I have to take Tylenol # 1 along with it and am wondering if I can purchase this over-the-counter through a pharmacy. I do not need a prescription for this in Canada. Any help greatly appreciated.

DOROTHY a replied: "This is a dangerous drug because its addictive. A drug so free to obtain can be your worse nightmare. I would suggest going to see your doctor and if its about not having time, please make time. Its important not to waste time on a drug you are aware can cause you future complications and problems. I am a recovering addict of 17 years, I would know."

RubiaBonita replied: "LISTEN TO ME!!!! I lived in Aus for 7 months and got pneumonia there and it was a disaster. Bring all the medicines u need or may need with u. Aus has a horrible selection of drugs...not joking. No tylenol, no advil, not even neosporin. Their immune systems are great and when I had pneumonia they gave me AMMOXICILLIN! I used to take that when I was 4. It didnt work and nobody could ship medicine from the US into Aus cuz customs takes it. Anyway my doctor had to give medicine to my parents to BRING TO ME. The over the counter medicines in Aus are very different from here..mild codeine is available over the counter but u need to ask a chemist (pharmacist) there for it. Please please listen to me, when my parents came over with my medicine I had them bring me EVERYTHING..nyquil, dayquil, vicks, tylenol, advil. Just remember tylenol does NOT exist in Aus. Their much weaker equivalent is called Panadol and never worked for me. Go to the doctor and ask for a prescription BEFORE u go. Dont even bother bringing a presciption get everything filled before you go because simple things like Allegra or Nasonex they do not have!!!!"

If you have cough/cold body hot water bath will help. Massage and exercise in front of morning sun is good thing, pl try. Pl try simple acupressure given below for immediate relief. If it fails you will have to go for Acupuncture. There is hardly any medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for RA, OA, Back ache, Ear ache/ringing, Stomach ache and almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic. Acidity, WORRY, sadness, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drug side effects, stress, bad smell, TV & COMPUTER SOMETIMES, Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy, BODY CONSTITUTION etc are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it. Acupuncture is the best treatment. I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see. Pain killers don't treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds. The useless drugs have tremendous power of side effects like liver/kidney failures, ulcer, inflammation of intestines and lot more. Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, tension, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods, SMOKING and alcohole. Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits like dates, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help if cough is not there. But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it is very strong. If it is acute pl search a painful point (with round tipped pen/jimmy) 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds. For forehead/eye pain the points are in front of nails on the finger tips or 3-7 mm below. It may disappear naturally too. Will pain management clinics perscribe narcotics for migrains? I get them so bad to point where Im puking and they last for 4 days.I've tried triptans and imitrex the only thing that worked was fiorinal without codeine. My Dr doesnt want to perscribe it though because its a controlled suppstance. I was on topamax to prevent them but I had to get off because I kept forgetting everything and got extremely irritable! Are pain clinics not so uptight about giving narcotics when you have a migrain? And I read up about fiorinal and a lot of people have good things to say about it but no one wants to perscribe it and it sucks because that did work! And its not like I go through it in 2 weeks. 20 pills lasts me over a month. Should I just try to go to a pain clinic? Thanks for your answers!

Susan Yarrawonga replied: "Apple cider vinegar, magnesium and coenzyme Q10 are all supposed to help for the prevention of migraines and you can find further information in web searches for "apple cider vinegar" + migraines, magnesium + migraines and "coenzyme q10" + migraines."

Free Thnkr replied: "Yes a pain clinic will do everything they can to stop the headaches but they will do a history on u and probably start with a narcotic that helps the average person who comes to them, it may take several different meds before u and them get u on the right one but definitely make an appt. Just a small note: most clinics require a referral from another doctor before they accept u"

ana r replied: "go to the pain clinic, they should help you, have you try seeing a neurologist what if you have a brain tumor or something else I am not trying to upset you but check it out for shire good luck because migraines suck I have them and are not fund."

Ross K replied: "Yes they will I have suffered for 20 years, there is morphine injections,Tramadol injection, they can prescribe Nor co,Percocet,Vicadin....some place will even inject Lydacaine in the back of your head to relieve the pressure, some insurance companies will allow you to have oxygen tanks so you can get increased air into the restricted vessels...My favorite is my chiropractor he has worked miracles....Just be careful with the addiction aspect of the pills, but I relate to the pain your feeling....Keep yourself well hydrated and when one comes on hit a Star bucks for a double shot of espresso...You may have to patiently shop for a doc but they are out there !!! Good luck"

I have very severe migraines. Right now I am prescribed fiorinal with codeine...Plz help! The fiorinal works a I've tried NEARLY ALL the TRIPTANS and preventative medicines, they dont work. Even imitrex doesnt work.Even if they are not chemically migraines, but cluster headahces, i still get migraine symptoms. The fiorinal works about 85% of the time when taken as prescribed, and I never want to take more than it says because my doctor told me not to. However, the other fifteen percent of the time the migraines are so bad (usually a strong vomiting feeling with dizziness, sensitivity to light and noise and extreme pain). This doesnt happen very often, but I was wondering if anything is prescribed as a second line medicine for such occasions. I looked online and found that srtronger medicines exist but they are very controlled. Is it unheard of for a migraineur to get an Rx to something like Dilaudid or Demerol? Should I consider asking my doctor? I don't want him to think badly of me so I am asking on the forum first. Thanks so much for your inputs.

Elvn replied: "You really should talk to your doctor. Maybe check into getting a cat-scan if one hasn't been done. Also, try going to a Massage Therapist for some relief. It helps but it is not a cure. Some energy work such as Reiki may be an option also. My brother used to get Migraines that bad too. I feel for you. Seriously, look into such alternatives mentioned above. All the meds aren't really good for your body but I do understand that sometimes you need this to control pain and other things. Good luck to you."

t replied: "Headache is a pain in the head, scalp or neck. Headaches can be caused by minor problems like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more serious reasons like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can have harmful side effects, so it is better to modify your lifestyle. More information available at"

Any US-based online pharmacies that assist with locating a doctor to prescribe pain meds? I am looking for US online pharmacy (overseas are illegal for these meds) to help me find a doctor that will prescribe oxycodone, hydrocodone, or something similar to help with my recurrent migraine headaches. I have tried everything else under the sun (Imitrex, Tylenol with codeine, and on and on) and these are the only things that help. I am not a "user", so please don't dismiss me as such. It's just that my doctor is reluctant to write me a prescription for something classified as a narcotic and I am reluctant to press him on the issue, even though I am convinced it is the only thing that will help me. He is a long-time family doctor and a trusted friend, so I hope to avoid finding a new doctor because of this problem. I get these migraines in clusters- anywhere from once a week to once every few months. So I know a supply as little as 30 pills would last me a very long time. I'm familiar with all the risks of addiction, etc. I'm just hoping someone out there can help me.

Lea replied: "It is illegal for a pharmacist to recommend any doctor."

Louise L replied: "You might try some alternative help with your migraine pain. I suggest the books below. On page page 321 of Australian Bush Flower Healing book they recommend Bauhinia, Black-eyed Susan Emergency Essence and she Oak. I would make a dosage bottle of all but the Emergency Essence (you can get this one made up) and take the others (7 drops of each and put in one ounce dropper bottle with water (distilled or spring) and 20% vodka to preserve and shake. From that bottle use 7 drops morning and night and the other take 20 minutes later or as needed. IF the pain is still high add Bottlebrush essence 7 drops to the Emergency Essence bottle and shake I believe this is what I would try before the drugs. I would also make sure I drank more water (distilled with 1/4 tsp of Celtic salt will help you hydrate better) I would also highly recommend NO artificial sweeteners, too many side effects linked to migraines Louise"

Does anyone have advice about migraines? I've only just begun having migraine headaches, I started getting them when I was 16. At first they were pretty few and far between, but by the time I started my senior year of high school I was getting 3 or 4 a week. I've been seeing a neurologist since, he's the top in his field, I have no known external triggers, (i.e. food, sunlight, smells etc) and so far nothing has worked for the pain. (I've been on Imitrex, zomig, axert, darvocet, vicodin, midrin, demerol, dilaudid, talwin, hydrocodone/Norco, fioricette with codeine and oxycodone hydrochloride to date.) I'm on a prophylactic (Norvasc) but lately I've been having many a week again. Does anyone know what I should do next?? Ok, a lot of people have been recommending getting my heart checked, keeping a food diary, etc. I do not have external triggers for my migraines, nor do I have a heart problem, autoimmune disorder or even high blood pressure. I've had extensive blood work done, MRI's, contrast MRI's, and nearly had a spinal tap done. There is no reason that I should be having them, and I'm wondering what pain medications or alternative methods worked for others. I've been on topamax, it doesn't help you lose weight and it made me sluggish, sleepy, lazy and not motivated. Please offer advice about what helped you when you were suffering from a migraine, other conditions and triggers have been ruled out for me. Thank you so much.

brazilian76 replied: "Hi Em...so sorry about the pain. This may sound strange, but try a behavioral psychologist. They often have behavioral techniques that can be helpful in moderating the pain and they may be able to explore whats goign on with you a little better so that you can uncover the trigger. Good luck :)"

miladyfaire replied: "I don't know if this will help you. But, for years i too had migraines, and they ended with me in ER, shots and then codeine at home.. I became allergic to codeine . I went to someone who used hypnoses in therapy. It worked!.. i actually went for other reasons, it was a bonus so to speak.. for me, it was connected to traumas of my childhood. The deeper i dealt with the past the freer i was in the present. I am cautious regarding medications. although there is a time and place for everything.. Sometimes i feel we need to get in tune with ourselves, our bodies. RELAX.. i know being in High School is pretty stressful. But, when we give ourselves the permission to be ourself, it is a big plus. The grades we work for, are they for you or others? Find your own personal desires for your purpose and successes that will inspire you better than anyone else can. What may seem earth shaking important now, in years may seem silly, and laughable.. and, the things you thought unimportant, were the key to succeeding in the future. Gaining a proper balance in all things is important. The body and mind need time to relax, get in tune with nature. Create lovely things, go to museums, a zoo.. skate, swim, laugh.. take hold of your life and let your environment be one of beauty. One doesn't need money to create joy, it is within you. I have had many traumatic experiences in life.. I don't know you, but i feel for you. and, know the debilitating pain migraines can give you. My heart goes out to you.. i learned when i helped and reached out too to others, i forgot my own problems, and that helped too. good luck!"

Datstuff replied: "My daughter got migraines from the age of13. We tried everything, as you did, and it did little for her. There a few times she even blacked-out. Then at age 19 she had to see an actual psychiatrist for "out of control" anger, among other things. He diagnosed her with Bi-Polar disorder and tried new drugs for that. Somewhere along the way she found she was having fewer, less intense migraines. She learned that migraines can also be "silent" where you don't even know you are having one! It was all attributed to her mental condition. She is doing really well now and taking drugs for this. If you were to be diagnosed you might find something other than migraines that is giving you such a problem, and cure your headaches at the same time. Good Luck."

hello replied: "Sounds like you should be tested for APS (Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome). This is how all of my problems started out. APS is associated with recurrent clotting events (thrombosis) including premature stroke, repeated miscarriages, phlebitis, venous thrombosis (clot in the vein) and pulmonary thromboembolism (blockage of an artery found in the lung due to a clot that has traveled from a vein). It is also associated with low platelet or blood elements that prevent bleeding. Recently, however, even more disease states have been linked with APL including premature heart attack, migraine headaches, various cardiac valvular abnormalities, skin lesions, abnormal movement/chorea, diseases that mimic multiple sclerosis, vascular diseases of the eye that can lead to visual loss and blindness. I can't take any of those quick fixes. They actually cause more problems...like trigger off TIAs for me. Below is some information on APS. But, yes, they should be looking for other causes. My migraines were never really migraines. They turned out to be Verterbrobasliar TIAs caused by APS. Edited to Add: Seriously, have they checked you for this. My pediatrician back in the day swore up and down that I didn't have an autoimmune problem. It wasn't until my first stroke that they started talking this serious. Low and behold, it turned out I had an autoimmune clotting disorder. If they haven't specifically tested you for it...please ask them to do so. I was 29 when the clotting was being caught. We figure now I was having TIAs (small strokes) way back at the age of 14 that were being dismissed as "migraines"."

cityguynice replied: "I have been suffering from Migraine for about 3 years and these have been my findings. Conventional treatment of migraine focuses on three areas: trigger avoidance, symptomatic control, and preventive drugs. Patients who experience migraines often find that the recommended treatments are not 100% effective at preventing migraines. Trigger avoidance Patients can attempt to identify and avoid factors that promote or precipitate migraine episodes. Moderation in alcohol and caffeine intake, consistency in sleep habits, and regular meals may be helpful. Beyond an often pronounced placebo effect, general dietary restriction has not been demonstrated to be an effective approach to treating migraine.Nonetheless, some people fervently claim that they have successfully identified foods which are likely to result in migraines, and by avoiding them, can decrease the likelihood of an episode. Symptomatic control to abort attacks Migraine sufferers usually develop their own coping mechanisms for vascular headache pain. A cold or hot shower directed at the head, a hot or cold wet washcloth, a warm bath, or resting in a dark and silent room may be as helpful as medication for many patients, but both should be used when needed. Some headache sufferers are surprised to learn that a simple cup of coffee is used daily around the world to control minor vascular headaches that are not quite migraines. Minor vascular headaches are frequently associated with the hormonal fluctuations of menstrual periods, irregular eating, and unusually hard work. For migraineurs, a well-timed cup of coffee can prevent outright migraine under the same conditions. A simple treatment that has been effective for some, is a counteracting "ice cream headache", briefly provoked by placing spoonfuls of ice cream on the soft palate at the back of the mouth. (Hold them there with your tongue until they melt or become intolerable.) This directs cooling to the hypothalamus, which is suspected to be involved with the migraine feedback cycle, and for some it can stop even a severe headache very quickly. Preventive Drugs The most effective prescription medications include several classes of medications including beta blockers such as propranolol and atenolol, antidepressants such as amitriptyline, and anticonvulsants such as valproic acid and topiramate. Hope this helps you !"

I took every pill on the market, had MRI's, CT scans, neurological evaluations, etc. I found a plastic surgeon that used Botox for migraine treatments. The injections went into the a two muscle groups in my scalp, along my forehead and between my eyes. I haven't had a headache, let alone a migraine in 7 years! Before Botox was FDA approved for cosmetic purposes two doctors at UCLA were doing testing for the cosmetic use. Their patients that had previously been migraine sufferers reported that their migraines were gone! Imagine getting Botox to help ease wrinkles and it also gets rid of your migraines! What a great side effect!! As soon as I read the research I got on the phone and asked every dermatologist and plastic surgeon within a 50 mile radius if they'd heard of it, would they inject me. I found a doctor outside Sacramento, CA that did it. I love him and swore I'd name one of my kids after him. I would try it. It cost me $225, and I go three times a year. My insruance doesn't cover it, but who cares? The pain is gone and my doctor take Visa! I wish you luck, I know how horrible it is and wouldn't wish that kind of pain on anyone. Just in case you haven't had kids yet, migraines hurt worse than a c-section!"

What about neurologist and migraines? I am a 30 yr old female who has suffered migraines for almost 10 yrs. Since the preganancy of my daughter. My mother also suffered exact migraines. She had a hysterectomy and has not had another migraine since. I have 2 Dr.s that believe my headaches are hormonel related and baromic pressure related. Please forgive my spelling. I experience a migraines atleast once or twice a week. I am familiar at the ER (where the Dr.s are great, some nurses are another story until they see me vomitting everywhere). In the past 7 yrs I have tried every thing. Triptans, things like Migranal, Cafergot, Imitrex,Topamax,Birth Control, you name it,I've tried it. I use to have to go in for shots of Demerol and Phenergan then started becoming allergic to that. Darvocet gives me rebounds, They prescribed me Tylenol with codeine but I became allergic to the codeine. They now use a medication on me, only when I visit the Dr. It's a nubain shot and phenergan. I've been on this for about 3 yrs now but only when I am seen by a Dr. I'm so lost. I can't afford to keep going to he Dr. for these shots. I had one Dr. who would have prescribed it to me with no problem but he was out of state and was a visiting Dr. who couldn't over step my Dr. He specializes in Phyciatry, so it wouldn't help to even travel to go see him. My depression worsens all the time cause the pain I am in. I am suppose to be going to a new neurologist this month but am scared to because they will probably just want me to go through everything I have already been through. I don't do drugs, I have never been addicted to prescription drugs, so I don't understand why I can't get a Dr. to prescribe me Nubain. I know it's a narcotic analgesic, however it's the best medication they have found to work for me. I do get aura' with some of my headaches but not all. I just want relief without having to travel to travel to get a shot and pay major bucks. Am I asking to much? I have a EMT who said she would have no problem giving me the shots when I needed them if I could get it prescribed. What are my chances of getting this type of medication from the neurologist? Are they slim. My first neurologist was a joke and spent the whole time talking about what hot dogs where made of and told me not to eat them, no medication no nothing. I have no triggers except weather changes and hormones. Sorry I am going on and on and ready to cry cause I don't know where to go anymore. I am getting so depressed about this again because I can't get help. 8 months ago I just got out of a hospital for depression and thought we found answers. After I was released, I was ignored. Now I am starting over. Can anyone please help me. Tired of the pain so bad. What do I expect from a neurologist?

Sparkles replied: "Are you ready to try something that is not a medication or addictive? I suffered migraines from the time I was 10 years of age. I had to be put on hormone therapy because of a serious illness. The hormone therapy caused me to begin have migraines, and they continued up until 3 years ago, and I am an adult. I read in a nutritional book that taking a calcium, magnesium, and zinc supplement would help the problem. You can buy the three minerals together at Walmart for under $10. I have been given every medication you can be given including Morphine and nothing helped the problems. I have headaches once in a while now, but they are controlled with simple buffered aspirin tablets and I have not had any migraines the way I used to have them. Hormone imbalance and barometric pressure also trigger my headaches. But now they rarely turn into a full blown migraine. My sister has gone to the Neurologist for her's and nothing stopped them. I elected to do this instead, and I am doing better than she did after going to see a Neurologist. He ran tests and treated her with a drug named Inderal because she cannot take pain pills. I am doing much better than she is."

I don't get aura, but sometimes get nauseous and have vomited. Although I have no children, my hormones are off balance, as a result of being on the birth control pill for nearly 15 years and just stopped it back in mid-August. I've been seeing a holistic nutritionist. I have found that eliminating refined sugars (candies, desserts and mostly fruits as well) and cutting out/down-on carbohydrates has helped. I also don't eat wheat anymore, as much as I can help it, and avoid processed foods and MSG. These things alone have minimized my migraines. And when I start eating sugar, too many carbs and wheats I notice my migraines come back. I too have tried many migraine meds. Have you tried Amerge? Amerge was the only prescription drug that worked for my migraines. It sometimes takes up to 45 minutes to work though. I now take MigraSpray. It's holistic and works [sometimes]. My mom also suffers migraines. She is on preventative meds for it though. Good luck to you. Hang in there--I can totally empathize."

Wayne P replied: "Have you seen an internist? You may have a cardiovascular problem. I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol and was having migraine visual aura. The doctor ordered an MRI to make sure I did not have an impending stroke. Since he put me on medicines to control those other problems the aura are mostly gone."

None of the IV meds worked either. Spent numerous nights over a two year period in the ER once the vomiting started for IV fluids to rehydrate. ( I know what you mean about the nurses,it must be universal ), finally a neurologist gave us the simplest solution. My daughters migraines were all strictly hormone related he said. So he put her on over the counter Naproxen, just 50mg that the store brand is, one everyday for three days before her period starts, everyday of her period and for three days after her period ends. Now I was skeptical for we had been dealing with 3 trips a month, at least, for two years, to the hospital for emergency IV fluids. However we followed the instruction and have never returned for IV fluids, she has had one or two migraines get started but always has got them under control with rest, ice, a dark room and the Naproxen. She will be 16 next month. No trips to the the ER for the last three years. It worked for her. Maybe it can for you too."

That including getting your tail (sacrum) back down where it belongs. It was raised considerably during pregnancy as the abdomen became more distended. Bear in mind, the sacrum is what your spine sits on. If it is an unlevel base, the spine has to change from its normal state. Is the reason most women have one hip higher than the other. Those changes involve the entire spine. To include the cervical spine. The resultant effect being; you will have unequal muscle tension at the base of the skull. Sufficient to become quite tender when pressed. This constant tension establishes an inflammatory process which generally remains sub-acute. But has been now established as a chronic condition. Hormones when changing each month are pretty well known for creating a swelling of the tissues. When you already have an inflammatory process inactive, it will be stimulated by this increased edema. From there you are aware of what takes place. You must be aware of other problems that exist. Such as a bit of problem with balance. Is why you don't stand with your feet together. In order to see to what degree this is involved, stand with your feet together and then shut your eyes. You will be more than surprised by the degree of imbalance noted. The point being, you do have a considerable postural discrepancy and it is the main culprit in your suffering the effects of migraine syndrome. Taking the time to retrain your body and attempt to recover what you have lost. This being one of the specialties of the doctor of Chiropractic. He/she will guide you into what is necessary for you to do at home to facilitate the progress of recovery."

dbgyog replied: "Neurologist know very little about it and Acupuncturists know most of it. Pl try simple acupressure given below first when you need temp relief. There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for RA, OA, Back ache and almost all painful diseases. Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods, SMOKING and alcohole. Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help if cough is not there. But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it is very strong. If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds. For forehead pain the points are in front of nails on the finger tips or 3-7 mm below. It may disappear naturally too.
