Reading Resources for Social Studies Teachers

About Me:

My name is Angie Hanlon and I am a 6th grade Social Studies teacher at Otwell Middle School in Cumming, Georgia. I attended North Georgia College & State University, where I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Middle Grades Education. I am currently working on my Master's Degree through NGCSU. I can say that I truly love my job and I love making a difference in the lives of my students!

The Importance of Literacy:

Literacy encompasses the ability to read, to clearly comprehend what was read, and the skill to write in response to the information that was read. Therefore, it can be determined that literacy is essential not only in Language Arts, but in all other content areas as well.

The ability to read and understand the material that was read is specifically important in regard to Social Studies. Students need to be able to pick apart material that was read in either the course textbook or a supplementary handout and have a clear grasp on the essential information within the text.

This website offers a wide variety of sample literacy strategies that can be used in most content areas. (However, the examples specifically pertain to Social Studies.)
