Electric muscle stimulation, or EMS, utilizes low frequency electrical pulses to mimic the nervous system, causing the muscles being stimulated to contract, increasing temperature and blood circulation. Many chiropractors use EMS in the treatment of certain nervous system issues, including chronic headaches, numbness of limbs, and back pain.

EMS is not a new treatment for chiropractors to use and it has been proven to effectively treat for pain over the long term and help contribute to total patient wellness. Many EMS patients eventually reach a point where doing simple stretches on their own, with only an occasional visit to their chiropractor, is sufficient to live pain free.

Any side effects from EMS therapy are usually very mild. Patients may experience muscle tenderness for a day or two in muscles that have been treated and are already sore from inflammation. Also, short-term redness or skin irritation may occur in the area where the EMS current was applied. Generally, this too will lessen and disappear over a one to two day period.  EMS therapy is not recommended for patients who have implanted medical devices or for pregnant women as a safety precaution.
