Welcome to Down With No Child Left Behind (NCLB)! Many believe that NCLB is crippling educational growth for the very children it aims to keep from falling behind. Its focus on measuring what students know via standardized tests, has had the effect of narrowing the curriculum for public school students across the US. Students are learning to be good test takers, but challenging project based lessons are reserved for wealthier and Whiter students. If students are going to have a chance at learning a meaningful curriculum, NCLB needs to be eliminated and replaced with a less measurement-driven approach to instruction that does not systematically punish students because of their family income or race.
