Derek Dean also known as Derelikt, has been writing, producing, performing, and recording hip-hop music since 1999. The passion for the art of being a musician was instilled in him at a young age, due to a multi-cultural upbringing. His mother Sheila always made sure he was open to all types, and styles of music, as well as people. Derelikt was born in a small town of Ashland, Ohio, and from birth, to age 7 was raised in a lower-class neighborhood, surrounded by 2 seperate junkyards, and train tracks. Life wasn't easy being raised by a single parent, with no father, or father figure around. The welfare, food stamps, and days without shoes, new clothes, or toys to play with were definitely things to get used to. Derelikt had a pretty happy childhood although these things were surrounding him, and music kept the faith in both his mother, and him. The radio would blare everything from LL Cool J, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, The Fat Boys, Run Dmc, etc. The variety of sounds in the household definitely played a part into his style today. As a teenager, Derelikt moved to the city of Mansfield, Ohio, where his mother and father's side of the family were originally from. Mansfield was a bigger city, nick named "Little Chicago", and people from allover Detroit, Cleveland, Akron, Columbus, Chicago, and other large metro areas moved there, and began to bring a more diverse culture than what Ashland had offered. In middle school, around 1997, a few friends had talked with Derelikt about rapping. With the large non-commercial acceptance of any "white rapper" at the time, Derelikt played along with his friends, and gave it a shot. He was hooked. The more exciting part about it was, he was different, yet skilled, and actually as he practiced more, became a local talk-of-the-town, and built a reputation. By the time high school ended, Derelikt had purchased a 4-track mixer, and condenser microphone, to use with his computer, to record tracks. By 2001, it was full-on music as a lifestyle. With close to a decade under his belt as an artist, producer, clothing designer, performer, and more, rest assured Derelikt will soon be a force to be reckoned with, and an undeniable contributor to the love, creativity, passion, and art of hip-hop.
