        Public and private surveillance are growing features of today's world.  Video surveillance now has the capabilities to monitor public spaces such as courthouses, restaurants and small businesses, as well as private sectors such as residences and government buildings.  But what is this fascination with surveillance, and where did it originate?  The simple answer exists with “panopticon.”  Jeremy Bentham, an English radical, founded the concept in the late 18th Century.  In short, panopticon was a prison based upon the “Inspection Principle,” which was the idea of one individual (the watcher) having the ability to keep track over many individuals (the prisoners) simultaneously.  But with the world becoming more sophisticated and the innovations of technology expanding, how is the idea of panopticon affecting contemporary society?
