Combining Mitragyna Speciosa and Other Drugs: The Facts You Need to Know

A common question first-time mitragyna speciosa users pose is whether or not kratom (another name for the herb) can be mixed with other substances—specifically, other drugs.  This is dependent on the drug, naturally, but as a general rule, the only substances that have been found to have very low negative interaction risks when used in conjunction with mitragyna speciosa have been caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.  Take note, however, that all the cases where positive results were obtained were ones where very small amounts of the other substances were used.  High doses—say more than a few drinks, in the case of alcohol—are strongly advised against by physicians who have seen the drug in action.

Particularly dangerous drugs that you should stay away from when using kratom would be drinks with very high alcohol content as well as opiates and other strong depressants, as kratom itself is a sedative substance and some postulate the combining it with substances such as, say, benzodiazepine would likely lead to respiratory depression (although such a situation has yet to be recorded).  Powerful stimulants like cocaine, large amounts of caffeine, and yohimbine should also be avoided: nearly all cases where these were mixed with kratom have been recorded by the users as unpleasant, and in some cases, very disturbing.

Like many other drugs (and normal, everyday foods, for that matter), mitragyna speciosa should not be mixed with monoamine oxidase inhibitors, as various negative interactions are considered highly possible.  Take note that mixing mitragyna speciosa with other “herbal” substances like marijuana or “magic mushrooms” has been recorded in several cases as extremely uncomfortable for the users: several even reported experiencing uncontrollable convulsions and syncope incidents an hour to three hours after their ingestion of the substances.

On the whole, you should keep your kratom ingestion or usage as pure as possible, as it lowers the risk of chemical interactions taking place.  If you are currently taking any regular medication, you are strongly advised not to try mitragyna speciosa, especially in doses above the light “entry” dose (usually just amounting to about 2 grams of the green leaf).
