Social/ Interactive Comm.

Earliest communicative behaviors may be challenging in children with Autism.

Many children lack any significant means of communicating needs or interest and often attempt to get thing themselves.

First communication behavior may be protesting fallowed by requesting desired objects or actions.

May use physical behavior to communicate interest.

Have difficulty sharing attention do not show social interest in partner, do not involve in joint attention, do not focus via eye gaze, may respond better to the presence of objects.

Object directed rather than person-directed.Spend extended periods of time using pre-intentional communication such as reaching or grabbing, using proximity to the object.

Limited awareness of other’s distress.

Have a delayed response to presence of strangers, also delayed response to separation from primary care giver.  Social/ Interactive Comm.

May use a person as a tool as communicative intent increases, but show reduced social interaction, do not make eye contact or visual referencing.

Could make eye contact across a physical space. May use pointing to request.

Reduced use of gestures to communicate emotional states.

Also reduced use of shaking head to answer yes/no questions, smiling, and waving.Have limited initiation of social games.

Have difficulty learning the rules of a game.

When playing may not notice other children or may reject the presence of other children and become stressed.

People with autism respond less to own name, may be mistakenly thought to have a hearing problem. They spend more time with adults or younger peers.

Discussion

There is a theory that some mild forms of  "disabilities" are over diagnosed. Is it possible that Different people just have different strengths and weaknesses but they are labeled as learning disabled? Discuss and comment on one other person's response.
