Several months after a tooth is extracted, the space where the tooth was located
begins to fill in with bone. In some cases, the bone may grow in slightly over the
gum line in a bony peak or ridge, and cause the gums to become uneven. This can
make dentures ill-fitting, causing problems both with speaking and with eating.
If you have had the last of your teeth removed, you should see an oral surgeon
before you have the mold made for your dentures. The oral surgeon can tell you if
you have any areas of the gum line that look like they may cause fit problems, and
then he or she can surgically remove them.
After your gums heal from the surgery, you can then be fitted for dentures that fit
properly. Well-fitting dentures are the solution to many problems. Dentures that do
not fit properly can cause mouth sores (from the dentures running up against the
gums and inside of the mouth) and cause problems eating, drinking and talking.
An oral surgeon can make sure that your new set of dentures is something for you to
be proud of.
