More than ever our emergency system is being called upon to help others.  When you have a medical emergency we have always been taught to call 911.  But what is an emergency?  When should someone call 911?

An emergency is defined as a state, especially of need for help or relief, created by some unexpected event according to dictionary.com.

But what qualifies?

Look for certain signs and/or symptoms.  These may include:

            Lightheadedness
            Dizziness
            Chest pain
Falls which result in neck and/or back pain
            Broken bones
            Passing out
Confusion or a change in mental status
            Shortness of breath
            Severe pain that suddenly happens
Any situation in which you think you cannot drive or ride to the hospital with friends or family

Please, do NOT move a person after an injury if you believe moving them may cause them further injury.

While this is certainly not an all-inclusive list, it does give you an idea of what a true emergency can be.

Calling 911:

When calling 911 and requesting an emergency ambulance please remember the following:

When speaking to a 911 operator speak in a clear, calm, collective voice.
Follow all instructions given to you.
If you are unsure or have any questions ask.
You will be asked multiple questions.  You may not know all the answers and that's ok.. just try to answer     them to the best of your knowledge.

  Non-Emergency Situations:

If you or a family member has a medical problem and it is not an emergency, please call your doctors officer.  Your doctor will be able to schedule you an immediate appointment to be seen.  Visiting the ER as we know is no fun, and more than likely will result in a long wait time and costly bills, which can be avoided by going to your doctor.

A final note:

If you are ever in doubt, please call 911 and an ambulance will always come.  The paramedics will be able to give you more information and guidance in whatever situation you are facing.
