SAINT THERESE WITH ROSES

by Sr. Genevieve of the Holy Face
(Celine Martin)

The Cause for Beatification progressed with amazing speed, and after 1910 Msgr. de Teil asked the Carmel to do a full portrait of Therese "which would correctly depict her character and indicate her own particular kind of spirituality for the devotion of the faithful." The 1912 drawing of Therese scattering roses on her crucifix was the answer to this request.

This drawing of Therese with the roses appeared for the first time in the 1914 edition of 'The Story of a Soul.' In 1925, Celine did another version of the same subject, this time in color, and she attempted to correct the faults of the first drawing ... This portrait was reproduced in sepia in 'The Story of a Soul' after 1925, and was widely disseminated in color pictures and postcards. (1)
