Common Causes of Mold

Common Causes of Mold

Mold can occur unexpectedly and for seemingly no reason. Did you know that wet clothes, slow leaking pipes, or even improper ventilation can contribute to mold growth in the home?  We have complied a short list of the most common factors in the home that can lead to mold growth.

Water

For mold to grow, there must be some form of moisture in the air or on the surface of a structure. Wiping down wet surfaces, such as the bathroom floor after showering or the kitchen counters after washing dishes can greatly reduce the likelihood that environmental conditions are suitable for mold growth. Be aware of appliances that are fed water through hoses or pipes. It is important to check behind your fridge, dishwasher and washing machine regularly to inspect for any small leaks.

Humidity

Living in a humid climate can also cause mold to grow. Mold typically begins growing when humidity levels exceed 55%. That’s why it is essential to keep the home well ventilated. A dehumidifier is a great solution for reducing the amount of humidity in the air. They can be purchased from your local hardware store for between $20 – $100. Opening windows in humid areas of the home, such as bathrooms and kitchens can also aid in reducing your homes humidity levels.

Poor Ventilation

Ventilation and humidity go hand in hand. For this reason, it is essential to properly ventilate the house and all rooms within it, including the bathrooms. Keep a fan running to increase circulation throughout the home or consider purchasing a quality HVAC system.

Mold Spores

Unfortunately, mold spores are very resilient and are present in the air at all times. Mold spores can remain dormant for extended periods of time until they find the right atmospheric conditions to thrive. If mold is disturbed, it will also release additional spores into the surrounds areas. This is a key reason why you should consult a professional and never attempt to remediate extensive mold yourself. If mold is incorrectly removed it can lead to further damage of your home or property.

Darkness

Mold cannot thrive in ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light interferes with mold spores’ DNA structure and causes the effected mold spores to essentially stop growing and reproducing. Air purifiers and dehumidifiers equipped with ultraviolet light are highly effective at preventing mold. Dehumidifiers and air purifiers can be purchased for a nominal fee at most hardware stores. During warm sunny weather, try opening all your curtains and blinds. Let the light it!
