Light emitting diodes or LEDs are in fact semiconductors that are able to create light energy in more efficient ways than conventional sources. When electrical energy is passed through the semiconductors, the excitation energy produces light, that emitted with the release of photons. The color of the light is determined by the chemicals with the semiconductors are injected. There is less heat that is created which results in more light energy that incandescent light bulbs. This makes LEDs much more energy efficient 8" led down light.

Four almost 4 decades, LEDs have found a wide variety of use in commercial applications, and in recent years they have been used in several innovative ways, that include household applications or for general lighting purposes.

LEDs are created for use in automobiles and because they are efficient consumers of energy, LED lights bulbs can be expected to be used in more innovative ways in the future, as the price of manufacturing them on wider scale is reduced. There are quite a few advantages that can still be gained with the use of LED light bulbs.

If costs are taken into consideration, the initial cost of purchasing LED light bulbs may be higher but, they last much longer, and therefore replacement costs are actually much lower than incandescent and Cool Fluorescent bulbs. While they last longer than conventional bulbs, they still fade out gradually. A claim of a bulb lasting more than 80,000 hours, means that after 80,000 hours, the bulb may now be operating at 50% efficiency, and should be replaced, although it may eventually last for more than 100,000 hours. Testing has shown that LEDs can last up to 10 times more than CFLs and almost 100 times more than an incandescent bulb.

The standard measure of comparing the light created by LED lights, is the lumen, which is a unit of brightness. What may be as equally important is the luminous efficacy or the quality of the lumens, which is the number of lumens that created with each Watt of energy. The average efficacy of current LED Light bulbs is now around 80.

The market is now inundated with LED lights of different forms, shapes and sizes 30w led down light. It can be easy to find decorative or ornamental lights to lights for appliances and devices, but many of these lights are made with questionable materials and may be of poor manufacture. Many of these may also not last as long as they would be expected, but it does not mean that LED technology is inferior.
