During the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, many large and dominant European countries began to spread their rule in order to "culturize" those deemed less civilized. Though they felt it was their duty, or more or less their burden to take on, they began to alter the more native nations. Because of the large western influence, the lands being taken over began to lose their culture and traditions. Worse, most imperialized lands were governed harshly and forced to obey rules and pay taxes to countries that did not give them any say in government. However, there were some upsides. Imperialized lands learned about all kinds of western ideas and practices such as religion, clothing, science, and technology. It is difficult to decide whether or not imperialism was justified, but it definitely shaped the history of the world. This website documents Britain's takeover of Egypt during the 19th and 20th centuries.
