History of Bloomington, Indiana

Explorers and settlers started to populate the area in and around Bloomington sometime in 1818, only two years after the state founded a school here that eventually grew into Indiana University. Bloomington itself has a rich history of limestone quarrying, bicycle racing, and even hosting a circus!

The biggest influence in Bloomington now is the university, but in the past we've also been home to the largest furniture making company (at that time) in the world, the Showers Brothers Furniture factory was located just a block or two west of downtown. The early businesses in Bloomington grew to support the young state run school that changed its name to Indiana University sometime in 1838.

Due to the international pull of Indiana University, Bloomington is home to people from over 130 different countries and boasts a broad array of cultural dining opportunities. A walk down 4th Street between Indiana Avenue and Walnut Street will take you past restaurants offering cuisine from India, Ethopia, Tibet, Italy, and more.

Sporting events are also exciting around Bloomington. The IU Men's Basketball team just came off a great NCAA Championship win a few years ago and they're looking like they'll win this year's (1992) title as well. For people more inclined toward faster sports, the Little 500 is still an event that must be experienced. The Hollywood movie "Breaking Away" only hints at the excitement that comes to town (along with lots of drunk college students) in late spring.
