he origin of Jiu Jitsu lies in Japan in the early 20th century before they even trained with the Jiu Jitsu Gi. The Samurai soldiers used all the basic techniques of the art during their fights along with their weapons. They did the joint locks, chokes, and many other types of steps that were a part of the martial art. As the Samurais wore armor, they could not utilize the art completely. Judo, karate, aikido and many other martial arts have their origin in this art form. In other words it can be considered the mother of all arts. There have been a lot of changes in the art since it originated to suit the requirements of its users.

The art has had its access throughout the world and is still considered as one of the best and complete martial art. From Japan Jiu Jitsu traveled all the way to Brazil and it was Master Mitsuyo Maeda who taught Carlos Gracie the art when they trained using the Jiu Jitsu Gi. Carlos, who was a boxer and had training in judo, in turn taught his four brothers the art. The brothers tried to teach it to others by opening schools. But the younger brother had to quit due to physical reasons. Beside this he had another problem; he was a short and a person who had very little weight. He found it difficult to use his skills against a big and tough opponent. By training in Bjj with the Jiu Jitsu Gi he was able to defeat bigger opponents.

After a lot of survey and research work, Helio Gracie gave shape to the Jiu Jitsu that we see today. He brought in technique in place of the application of strength. Leverage was used to combat an opponent. And the result was that a small man like Helio could defeat a man who had double the size with ease. As it is, the martial art is a combat between two people and has to be performed on the ground. Grappling was adapted by him from wrestling. He used multiple moves like choking, joint locks, pinning, throwing, biting, strangling and gouging to combat his opponent. He used two techniques- break the lock and break free and the break the fall, in defense. These techniques were all taught using the Jiu Jitsu Gi, as the Bjj Gi enhances your level of technique.

There are three steps in Jiu Jitsu. In the first step you have to escape from your opponent. In the second stage you have to captivate your opponent by making him/her immobile. This can be done by using joint locks, in which the joint is pressurized so that there is pain in mobility. In the last stage, you have to use escalation force. By utilizing this force you are able to combat your opponent without hurting him/her, nor hurting yourself. The end of each class is followed by a demonstration of what happened in the class. Repetition of the events prepares the students to face their life.
