When you initially start to get into online marketing and explore the waters a little, it's not hard to become overwhelmed. As you go through information in articles and online forums, you'll see all types of lists featuring "how you too can be the next big thing!" The items on these lists likely all seem contradictory. One will state that you have to be patient if you wish to be the next big thing. Another will say that you must be very smart about business if you wish to be the next big thing. Still, another will state that creativity is what will help you succeed. And, naturally, there are going to be scores of sales pages claiming they have the software program or class to teach you how to be the next big thing.

The truth is that all of these things are important to your success (well, possibly not all of those software packages, but the other stuff). You do need to have patience, business savvy and creativity if you desire to achieve success. Nonetheless, none of those things count if you are not able to intelligibly communicate all of them to the people you want to buy from you.

Good communication involves more than just creating a kick-ass sales page. A seasoned copywriter can handle that component of your project. A pretty site and extensive FAQ are not what you need for good communication. You can get those by employing seasoned web site designers and writers. Effective communication requires being good with interpersonal communication and in straightforward copy as well. So, what exactly should you do to accomplish that that?

1. See to it that any email doesn't sit unanswered for more than 24 hours. We aren't joking with you. You don't need to write a novel in the body of each email. You can merely inform the person who emailed you that you've received and read his email and will be getting back to him shortly. Try including a snippet that references something the sender has written. This helps the the other person tell you apart from the auto responders that everybody else uses.

2. Don't let the phone keep ringing. Being a call screener is lame. Whenever your telephone starts to ring, pick it up by the third ring. You need to do this even if the Caller ID tells you that the call is from a person that you really do not wish to talk to. There's one good news about this rule. You don't need to be attached to the telephone all day and all night. Instead of this, specify distinct "business" hours that you are available to take phone calls. These hours should be displayed prominently on your web site and stated in your voice mail message as well. And, obviously, each individual who leaves a message deserves to have his call returned.

3. Check in with people to be certain that they received your memos, emails, letters, etc. This shows them that you care about your correspondence with them. You'll endear yourself further with the people you work with and who buy from if you ask them if they have any questions and check to be sure that they understood the points you were trying to make.
