In-Depth Information on Utility of Performance Catalytic Converters

Millions of cars run on the road and the number is increasing at an alarming rate, which along with is increasing the extent of air pollution. Especially in big cities, the amount of pollution being produced by the vehicles gives birth to serious problems. As the needful, the governments of various nations had made strict clean-air laws to restrict the extent of pollution, which vehicles can produce.

What are Catalytic Converters

Over the years, the car makers have made numerous refinements to the engines of cars to make them more fuel efficient, which works at par to the specifications of such laws. This is the reason, for which a catalytic converter is being fixed to the car. The prime function of performance catalytic converters is to convert the obnoxious exhaust gases into less harmful compounds before they are being released by the exhaust system into the air.

How Does it Work

The exhaust gases being released by the engine of a vehicle comprises of three harmful compounds, namely:

  • Hydrocarbons (unburned gasoline)
  • Carbon monoxide (produced during the combustion of gasoline)
  • Nitrogen oxides (produced when the heat inside the engine pressurize the nitrogen gas present in the air to merge with oxygen)

The catalyst present in the catalytic converter, which is mainly made of palladium and platinum, is layered onto ceramic beads or a ceramic honeycomb that is placed in the muffler-like system, fixed to the exhaust pipe. The catalyst works to convert the carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. Furthermore, they convert the hydrocarbons into water and carbon dioxide and the nitrogen oxides into oxygen and nitrogen. Converting such harmful gases into simple compounds certainly, reduces the level of auto emission, thereby minimizing the environmental pollution.

The performance catalytic converters come with great efficiency in converting the harmful gases into simpler compounds, which not only ensure proper functioning of the engine of the vehicle but also reduces the extent of automotive emission. They can withstand extreme conditions and thus, are extremely durable.
