How to Choose your Wedding Photographer

The date is set, the ring is on your finger, the families are informed – your wedding day is coming! This is a momentous occasion that only happens once in a lifetime (in most cases).  Being an event that takes a lot of time, effort, and love to put together, it’s only fitting to have it documented by a professional photographer.

Don’t rush off and get the first photographer you come across, however. Here are a few factors to consider when it comes to selecting your wedding photographer:

1. Portfolio – Check out the portfolios of different photographers, and see whose style you like the most. If you prefer a non-traditional, photojournalistic type of photography style, don’t choose someone whose portfolio consists mostly of posed shots. Some photographers excel in glamorous type of photography, while some are better at capturing spontaneous, candid moments. Neither is better than another – what it boils down to is how well their style will suit your personal taste.

2. Your wedding  - Is your wedding going to be in a beautiful, solemn church, or will it be more of beachside barbecue? You’ll want to choose a photographer who has previous experience with similar locations. If you’re going to have a beach wedding, you want to make sure your photographer knows how to deal with bright lighting conditions (as is usually the case with beach shots). Conversely, if your wedding is to be held in a church which may tend to be low in lighting, you’ll want to have a photographer who is confident working in low light conditions. If your photographer is already comfortable shooting in situations similar to that of your wedding day, there’s a better chance they’ll manage to capture the magical moments, instead of having to worry about their camera settings.

3. Feedback – It’s always better to choose a photographer about whom you’ve heard excellent feedback. You may have someone who’s a total genius behind the camera, but hopelessly unreliable. Go for the reliable ones. You don’t want to be worrying about your photographer being on time on your big day, because you’re going to have a lot of other things to stress over. If you hear bad feedback about a photographer, particularly his dependability, walk away. You don’t want the nights leading up to your wedding to be spent sleepless, worrying about whether your photographer is going to flake on you. Bad feedback doesn’t just pertain to showing up on your wedding, it extends to the delivery of the photos themselves.

4. Personality – You’ll want to have an excellent working relationship with a photographer, so be sure that you and your spouse-to-be feel comfortable around him. If you feel that a photographer’s personality is too abrasive or gloomy for you, don’t hesitate to look for other options. You want your wedding memories to be documented by someone you can trust. You might have particular ideas about how you want your wedding photographs taken too – so be sure you choose someone you feel understands your vision for your wedding day.
