Artistic Statement

As an artist who works in the dance world, I take in all of my surroundings and experiences in order to influence my dancing, choreography and performance. I believe that through dance I am able to illustrate to my colleagues my influences, and my audiences a part of who I am. Showing my choreography is a very precious and vulnerable act; sharing with outsiders my passion and commitment to dance, and specifically choreography, is something I find to be very satisfying and rewarding.

Growing up in a small town with conservative views, I had to expand my knowledge of the world and venture outside of the area to find inspiration. By traveling to other countries and regions and witnessing how others interact, perform rituals, and survive in their everyday lives, I have learned that inspiration for choreography can come from many places. I consider it to be extremely significant to take note of the issues going on in neighboring communities, our country, and around the world to produce works of art that are creative and sophisticated. Also, I wish to work with, in the intimate rehearsal process, dancers who share the infatuation, devotion, and knowledge of modern and contemporary dance.

As a performer in modern and contemporary dance, I strive to perfect my technique as well as bringing a level of performance quality that others cannot. I believe that having great technique is important, however its the performance quality I present that allows me to captivate my audience. Performance is about living in the moment, opening up for all to see why I dance. For me dance isn’t only a leisurely pursuit; it is my lifestyle, my obsession, my soul, and my career.
