Can Robert Griffin III Keep Things Up?
One of the biggest cash cows in cash fantasy football took the field in
New Orleans to open the season Sunday. Only nobody thought it would be the
visiting team. While the Saints certainly didn’t disappoint their cash fantasy
football owners (Brees despite going 24/52 finished with 339 yards and three
touchdowns, and Lance Moore caught six passes for 120 yards and touchdown), all
about the buzz after the game was how rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III
showed up a Drew Brees and his mammoth new contract, in New Orleans in his
first ever start.
Griffin was only 19 of 26 but threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns in
the Redskins 40-32 win. Griffin instantly becomes a viable starter in cash
fantasy football, but after that gutsy road team against a high scoring playoff
team like the Saints, is it worth wondering whether Griffin could stun everyone
and lift the Redskins to the playoffs in his first season?
Last year’s division winner the New York Giants looked sloppy in their
opening day loss. The Eagles barely managed to squeak by a far inferior Browns
unit, and the Cowboys are notorious for their December fades. It’s only one
game, but Griffin proved that he clearly has the ability to make huge plays.
That’s why, regardless of whether the Redskins’ defense is any good (too
hard to tell after giving up 32 to one of the best offenses in the league),
Griffin should be on everyone’s cash fantasy football radar. We haven’t even
really seen what he can do with his legs other than avoid pressure, but one has
to imagine that its only a matter of time until he’s using his feet to rack up
fantasy points. All of this, of course, presupposes that this wasn’t a one week
wonder. Some may even be wise to take next week’s game at St. Louis with a
grain of salt, considering the defense, but don’t forget about him.
