Backcountry Hiking Advice

Hitting the trail and heading into the backcountry is a great way to exercise and enjoy the wonders of nature.  If you are planning on taking an extended trip in the backcountry, there are some important things to keep in mind to ensure your trip is a massive success.  In the following paragraphs, we will explore the ways you can ensure you have a great time in the backcountry.

If you are an adventure travel novice or seasoned expert, there are items that both groups need to carry on the trail.  First, bring plenty of water.  Dehydration is the enemy of every person on the trail.  In addition to water, make sure you have an up to date map of the area you will be hiking.  A compass, waterproof match, additional layers for colder temperatures and first aid kit should also be included in your pack.

One thing to never forget when you head into the backcountry is your wits.  A lack of focus and common sense can prove fatal on the trail.  Make sure you listen to your body, rest when you need to and take your time.

Make sure you leave yourself enough time to set up camp at the end of the day.  Hiking until sunset may look pretty, but setting up a campsite in the dark is no fun.  Remember; never bring food into your tent.  Your tent is your home on the trail and you don’t want a critter – big or small coming over to visit your house.

Practice leave no trace camping.  Basically, this means leave your campsites and the trail in the same, if not better condition than when you found them.  Keeping nature beautiful is the responsibility of every person who puts on hiking boots.
