Five quick diagnostic steps to get your AC running

It is difficult to beat the heat without an air conditioner. At such times, your AC shutting down can turn into a nightmare. But don’t panic! You can take some simple diagnostic steps to resolve problems with your air conditioner. You will be surprised at how often these steps get your AC up and running again.

Take these steps if your AC is not running and when it is blowing hot air instead of cool air.

Step 1: Inspect the AC exterior or your compressor and condenser unit. Make sure the compressor fan is working. Next, progressively check the unit service switch for compressor condenser unit, indoor power switch, circuit breaker and fuse and ensure that they are on. Make sure condensing coil is not blocked or damaged. If the coil is malfunctioning, the compressor may make a lot of noise or stop running altogether. Next, inspect the outdoor fan and its motor.

Step 2: Inspect the air conditioner indoor air handler. Ensure that it is running. If not, check that its power switch is on. This unit is commonly located in the basement or attic areas. In some air conditioning units there are multiple switches. Make sure they are all turned on. After this make sure that the air handler cover is properly closed. Also, look out for a dirty cooling coil since a blocked coil will not allow your air conditioning unit to cool properly. This is also why these units need annual servicing.

Step 3: When your AC is blowing hot air instead of cool, check the air filters. It is likely that they have been blocked by dirt and debris.

Step 4: Check the system ducts along with air supply registers. Ensure that all registers are in ‘open’ position. You will be able to see this through the duct system. Make sure no carpet or furniture is blocking these registers. After this, check that the flex-duct section is connected properly. Ensure that no air filter is blown into the system duct to clog it. Check for leak stains around the register which controls ceiling air supply.

Step 5: Check the indoor handler plus blower unit’s fan assembly. You need to ensure that it is receiving power. Check if the motor reset button tripped. Also, check that the blower fan is not loose.
