Types of laminating film

Almost any graphical printed product can be laminated. Lamination is the process of application of a protective laminating film on a substance to protect it from weather elements. Laminating with a proper laminating film provides long-term protection to the laminated material from moisture, water, grease, smudges, fingerprints, chemicals, sun and creases.

Polypropylene (OPP), polyester (PET) and nylon are the three common laminating film materials. Laminating films come with different widths, thickness, finishes and thermal sensitivity.

Polypropylene laminating film

Polypropylene is the least expensive laminating film material. It is also less durable than other laminating films. Nonetheless, it provides a high glossy finish. It is also suitable for post lamination finishes. Polypropylene films can be fed into almost all types of laminators.

Polyester laminating film

If you are looking for a laminating film that offers better protection than polypropylene, you can choose polyester film for laminating your printed products. However, polyester films are not as glossy as polypropylene. Owing to their reasonable price and ability to enhance the appearance and lifespan of graphical document, polyester is currently the most popular choice for laminating.

Nylon laminating film

Nylon is recognized as the best laminating film material. The thermal resistant property of nylon laminating film makes it the best material for the thermal lamination process. It does not expand when heat is applied and do not shrink when the sheet is cooled. By absorbing moisture from the material to be laminated, it also prevents curls. However, nylon laminating films are expensive. They are primarily used in laminators that work at high temperature.

Hot laminating film

Polyester is usually the base component of hot laminating film. The adhesive resin layer of the film melts and spreads over the document when heat is applied, bonding the material with the film. For stiffer lamination, you need films with larger polyester content. Hot laminating films offer gloss, matte, luster or satin finish.

Low melt laminating films

Low melt films is a type of hot laminating film that require small amount of heat for the lamination process. They are used for laminating photos and graphical products printed from ink-jet printers that may be damaged by high temperature.

Cold laminating films

Cold laminating films uses pressure sensitive laminators for laminating documents. They are ideal for laminating and encapsulating documents unsuitable for thermal lamination process. Pressure sensitive adhesives are used for bonding the laminating film to the document. They can be used for general lamination, encapsulation and over-lamination.
