Monster is a realistic dipiction of the true story of Aileen Wuornos, one of America's first female serial killers. Aileen Wuornos had a difficult and cruel childhood plagued by abuse and drug use in Troy Michigan. At the age of 13 she became pregnant after being raped. After giving birth, she gave the child up for adoption and hit the road as a prostitute. Homeless and Penniless, she was forced to sleep in wooded areas and abandoned cars. Eventually, Aileen found her way to sunny Daytona Beach Florida, where she began earning a living as a highway prostitute. The movie focuses on the nine month period between 1989 and 1990, during which time Aileen (Charlize Theron) met, and had a lesbian relationship with Selby Wall (Christina Ricci). One evening, while prostituting along a Florida highway, Aileen was picked up by a john who bound, raped, and tortured her. When Aileen finally freed herself from her bindings, she shot her assailant, taking his money and property. Later, when faced with the financial burden that came along with supporting both herself and Selby, Aileen resorted to killing more of her clients- this time in order to get money without the exchange of sexual favors. Eventually, the police caught up with Aileen, arresting her outside of a Daytona Beach bar named the Last Resort. When faced with criminal charges herself, Selby abandoned Aileen and testified against her in court, sending Aileen to Florida's death row to be known as America's first female serial killer. The real Aileen Wuornos was executed in 2002.
