Richard was born in Derby on the 23rd February 1949. After attending Stanley College, he joined the Territorial Army in 1977, commissioned into the third battalion of the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters where he spent nine years. In 1965 he joined the family business selling pop records in Derby Market Hall, until in 1988 after a trip to York, Richard decided to sell Derby instead. After six months he was the chairman of Derby and Derbyshire Tourism Association, where he remained for three years.
On May 26th 1975, Richard married his lovely wife Julia.
In September 1992, Richard opened the Derby Heritage Centre. Richard's ghost walks around the centre of Derby has seen 95,000 visitors, and is one of Richard's biggest successes. Richard has also bought the Old Derby Gaol which now hosts both ghost walks and overnight vigils. The Gaol has given Richard, what I think is his biggest break yet. The highly acclaimed TV show Most Haunted visited Derby Gaol to spend 24 hours as part of their first series. During their visit they interviewed Richard as the owner, he was such a natural that they made him a permanent member of the team. He has been involved with the show ever since.
Richard lives in a 17th century farmhouse just outside Derby, with his wife Julia and 2 sons Edward and William.
