Mechanik/ BVE
Both Mechanik and BVE are freeware cab-view train simulations that have easily modifiable characteristics. Everything, including graphics, sounds, cab interiors, and routes can be modified or created from scratch. Mechanik was created by Polish students, and until late 2000, was the best cab-view train simulator available. It was plagued with blocky graphics, though. Interest in Mechanik has waned lately, but a second version of the program is currently under construction.
BVE is a similar Japanese program, but with higher quality graphics. Perhaps its best feature is that the trains actually rock back and forth and lean into turns. It had been around since the early 90s, but Western users had difficulty installing it to their PCs. When train-simers in the Western Hemisphere were finally able to adapt it for use on Western PCs in late 2000, a huge following took off. Even with the release of Microsoft Train Simulator, BVE has still remained popular due to its superior sound, train handling characteristics, and its easily modifiable components. Mechanik Skins (Bitmaps/ Line Art):
Although Mechanik is arguably obsolete, these skins are still worth a look, and could easily be adapted for use with BVE.
