NEBRASKA PATENTS

Note: To view the patents represented by these numbers, your web browser must have .tiff image viewing capacity. This advisory   from the U.S. Patent Office explains the requirements and has links to appropriate free software.

Nebraska patents provide a perspective into the interests and concerns of Nebraskans through time.  Nebraska became a territory in 1854; settlements prior to the Civil War were limited to the eastern fringe adjacent to the Missouri River and its tributaries, and along the overland trails to the west.   Early Nebraska patents include pioneer forays into sugar production, "ghost towns," and other curiosities.

Most of the later numbers in this fragmentary list were identified in the course of looking for a specific patent issued on a given date. That is the reason why the list will show several patents for one date, with a big time gap before and after. In 2005, the compiler also started a long-term project to browse "all" patents beginning with number 1. The 1860s - 1880s listings indicate progress on that front. Google patents  provides another means to find Nebraska patents; the results are not presented in order by number or date.

The list shows a patent number, date in YYYYMMDD format, patentee's "town," and a "key word." A few patents on the list have shared responsibility, or were assigned to a Nebraskan.   The page is designed to display as a narrow column.

Thanks to Mike "Rat" Urness, Joel Havens, and all others who've supplied numbers for this list.

USER TIP:  You can use the Find on this page   (ctrl+F in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox)   command to look for towns or key words

This list does not go beyond the point where the patent database is searchable by patentee, location, etc. -- currently 1976.
