The need to project power has lead to American naval and air bases through out the world, allowing the air force and navy to be used across the world.
America has claimed areas that it needed in order to re-equip it forces, and will likely continue growing territorially in that aspect, as well as using its economic strength to continue to maintain and improve itself.
America will grow because growth is required to maintain the current status quo. Continued American growth allows America to be a moral and economic leader, which is something that American presidents have strived to be capable of since the administration of Woodrow Wilson.
