1. Unplug the stock injectors.
Install one of the quick connectors on each of the two +12 volt wires
going into the stock injector harness plug . This is the +12 volts from the stock
resistors to the injectors ,these will be used in step #22. You can cut off the
old connectors and tape ends if you like after finding the correct wires.
2. Disconnect battery.
3. Remove passenger side kick
panel, then remove stock computer by taking out screws and unplugging .
4. Remove glove box by taking
out screws at bottom.
5. Pull the grommet in the
engine compartment (this is the one the O2 wire passes thru..) located in the
firewall on the passenger side out of the firewall. This is were the new main
wiring harness will pass thru. It helps to X- cut the insulation in the
firewall, before pulling the harness thru.
6. Insert a metal rod thru the
open hole, from the engine side until you see it near the glove box opening.
7. We have found that a good way to get the
harness thru the firewall is to layout the harness and tape with masking tape,
the connectors and connector pins ( best to leave the small plastic bag on the
pins to protect them) to the wire harness then place a plastic bag over the
harness end to be pulled thru, tape the bag tight and tape a pull string to the
bag/ harness. Then tape main harness pull string to the metal rod inside car,
and carefully pull rod and harness thru
firewall into engine compartment. ( Note some have removed the fan box to make
this easy.)
8. Remove harness pull string
and cover wrap.
9. Harness will run along top
of firewall from passenger side to driver side near brake booster, then forward
to the injector and sensor connectors.
10. Install the three pin
connectors on to main harness as follows:
(A) There is a set of red, black, and purple wires, these will go
to the MAP sensor. The three pin connector
is labeled A,B, and C. Insert the
red wire in C. Insert the black wire in A. Insert the purple wire in B. Then push the green seals into the connector
and snap the cover shut.
(B) There is a set of red, black, and yellow wires, these will go
to the TPS sensor. The three pin connector
is labeled A,B, and C. Insert the
red wire in C. Insert the black wire
in A. Insert the yellow wire in
B. Then push the green seals into the
connector and snap the cover shut.
11. Remove over the valve cover
pipe .
12. Disconnect fuel line, fuel
regulator line and remove the TB fuel rail by taking out the two screws that
hold it down, Remove the regulator as it will be used with the new fuel rail.
13. Install regulator on new fuel rail.
14. Install the included seals that go under the
injectors into the throttle body make sure they are seated , next install the
new fuel rail with the new spacers between fuel rail and throttle body, using
the new screws.
15. Connect fuel lines, also connect
regulator vacuum line .
16. Install the new water temp sensor by unplugging and
removing the stock sensor located on the manifold (at has two wires to it) and
the new sensor (use sealer or Teflon tape) should screw right in.
17. Install new MAP sensor on fwd. side of driver
side strut housing, using the self sticking
Velcro included. Vacuum line goes
to REAR one of the three lower ports on the TB . Use T if needed. It
is best to have only the MAP sensor and boost gage connected to this port.
18. Install one of the quick connectors on each of the
three wires coming out of the stock TPS
sensor.
19. Plug the wires from the TPS 3 pin connector
into the quick connectors you just installed as shown. Note: do not plug TPS back into old harness.
20. Install the new air temp sensor in the over
the valve cover pipe by drilling a Ύ size hole as shown (see picture next
page) in front or back side of the pipe
near the TB side of the pipe. Keep in
mind clearance to hood. Place sensor in
hole and install holding clip inside pipe. Note silicone sealer should be used
under sensor.
Note 83 model is shown
others are similar.
21. Reinstall over the valve cover pipe.
22. Run the wires neatly to the sensors, use the
wire cover as needed and plug in the main harness plugs to all the sensors and
the new top. The two red wires connect to the quick connectors install in step
#1 one to each wire.
23. Connect the orange and brown wires in the new
harness as shown:
(a) Install Ignition adapter as
shown The black and white wires from the Ignition adapter tie into the two
wires from the distributor pickup using the quick connectors. Mount or Ty-rap
Ignition adapter as needed.
Note 83 model is shown others are similar.
This picture shows the Ignition adapter
(right) and Map sensor (left).
Note: The black and white wires change color on the
dist .side of the plug , the black changes to white and the white changes to
yellow. The above drawing shows them connected at the harness side of the plug.
Do not connect to the black/yellow stripe wire on either side of the plug.
24. Install the wire cover and
run the main harness wires neatly along
the firewall, ty-rap all wires as needed .
25. The FC-1 controller is mounted in the glove
box when done or some have mounted were the stock computer was.
26. Inside the wires that must be connected are:
These connections are made to the stock computer
harness near the stock computer plug using one of the quick connectors to the
wire ,except for (d).
First connect the
(a) +12- The new wire color is RED from the filter and
connects to the stock computer harness RED wire. (There are two red wires side by side
on the old computer small connector use
either one.)
(b) fuel pump control -The
new wire color is YELLOW and connects to
the stock computer harness WHITE/ RED wire (large connector).
(c) O2 The new wire color is BLUE . (connecting this is
optional) if used connect to O2 sensor wire. This connect to the WHITE wire
at the stock large connector pin 11, see drawing)
(d) Main ground- The black wire
from the filter with the ring lug at end, this grounded to the frame by using
one of the old computer mounting holes and screw.
27. Reinstall glove box and
bring main harness into glove box if mounting FC-1 in glove box. Be sure
harness does not get pinched when closing. The FC-1 may also be installed were
the stock ecu was, with the Velcro.
28. Check over the system.
(a) Fuel lines connected and
tight?
(b) Map sensor connected to
correct port?
(c) All sensors and injectors
plugged in?
29. Reconnect battery.
30. Plug main harness into FC-1
controller.
31. Turn key to on (not start),
you should hear the fuel pump run for two seconds. Turn key off. Repeat once.
32. Check for fuel leaks. DO NOT
START IF THERE ARE LEAKS.
33. Start car, warm up and
DRIVE!
34. The mass air can be removed
from the air box (just plug any holes) or a cold air intake with filter
installed.
35. Note: Warm-up and idle.
The stock idle air motor may be remove or left in
place. The idle is now adjusted with the idle screw only and is set to give
about 1000 rpm when warm. At the correct setting the engine should idle at a
lower rpm when cold then come up to the 1000 rpm range as it warms up. The
engine should be warmed up before driving.
If you have problems:
(a) Check all connections.
(b) Check for +12 volts on the
red injector wires with the key in the on position.
(c) Turn key to on (not start),
you should hear the fuel pump run for two seconds. Turn key off. If this is ok
the the FC-1 is good.
(d) Try connecting ONLY the MAP
sensor to the REAR one of the three lower ports on
the TB.
(e) Is TPS unplugged from old
harness?
(f) Crank engine and see if the
red light on the FC-1 flashes, if not check the IAM-1 and its connections.
