BIOMED TECHNICIAN

What is a Biomed Technician?

According to the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), a Biomed Technician is "a person who is knowledgeable in the theory of operation, the underlying physiological principles, and the safe clinical application of biomedical equipment".

A Biomed Technician, or BMET has a wealth of knowledge in electronics, mechanical and other principles of engineering. The person must be able to perform installations, repairs, preventive maintenance. Also overhauls and upgrades.

The BMET has a firm knowledge of physialogy and anatomy and how the many differant types of medical equipment applies to patient care. Many times the BMET is called on to insure that the equipment will fulfill the requirments to treat or monitor the patient. The BMET is also relied on for training staff on operation and functionality.

BMETs are found in almost every aspect of the medical profession. Manufacturing, hospitals, labs, outside repair services, field service, and leasing venders all need repair technicians. Why? Because the medical equipment that a facility owns are assets that are very expensive to purchase. Patient safety is also a huge liability.

There are education programs available, but most employers will start entry-level technitions with a AS (2 year) degree. Some entry-level positions may only require that the technician be closely supervised on repairs and other scheduled maintenances.

In the next update I'll go further into education and requirements in certification. Please check out the AAMI and 24x7 web site. I'll be adding more related sites soon.

'Till next time!
