Backround Pythagoras lived during 6th century B.C. on an island of Samos in the Aegean Sea in Egypt. He was a teacher, philosopher, amystic, and a religous leader. He made many contributions to math, astronomy, and the theory of music. He also had a school that he called the Pythagorean School of Mathematics. He had many followers who were called Pythagoreans. They had to obey strict rules, had to practice obedience, silence, staying away from food, having simple clothes, having simple possessions, and having the habit of examining yourself often were required of the Pythagoreans. It has been said that during 6th century B.C., some of Pythagoras' students helped him write the pythagorean theorem.
Contribution His contribution is the pythagorean theorem. It was written because he wanted to show that any two lengths were multiples of another length and wanted to prove it. Pythagoras was so happy when he proved it that he sacrificed a bull. Pythagoras was credited with coming up with the first proof to the theorem. He also made a contribution to music when he found that vibrating strings make harmonious tones when the ratios of the lengths of the strings are whole numbers, these ratios can also be used for other inturments. For astronomy Pythagoras and his students were the first people to consider the earth as one of many planets that revolve around the sun.
It's use today We use this theorem in math(algebra and geometry) and physics to prove that a triangle is a right triangle and to find the sides of a right triangle. Pythagoras also found that the square root of two is irrational. The pythagorean theorem also helped motivate Fermat's Last Theorem.
Other Facts **This theorem is also used in Euclidean Geometry. **It was one of the earliest theorems known to ancient civilizations. a and b are the legs. c is the hypotenuse(c is across from the right angle)
