General Notes: David Mason COLE
Given Name: David Mason
Surname: Cole
Sex: M
Birth: 9 Nov 1777 in Washington county,VA
Death: 4 Mar 1861 in clinton county,KY

Father: Sampson COLE
Mother: Kesiah COLE
David crossed the Cumberland Mountains from Virginia to Kentucky with pack horses, and settled among the Indians in Clinto County near Albany, where he lived, raised his family and died. He obtained his land from the state by paying a small surveyor's fee, and became a prosperous farmer and stockman
An early settler on the Clear Fork was David Cole.... The earliest date of his being in Clinton county that we have is June 11, 1817 [Cumberland Co. at that time], when he purchased from Alexander Beaty a tract of 130 acres on the Clear Fork.... This tract lay across the creek from the present Clear Fork church. Through various purchases of land on the Clear Fork and in and around the old town of Paoli, Cole became one of the county’s prominent landowners. The 1837 tax list shows him owning 540 acres on Spring creek (actually Clear Ford), in nine tracts as well as seven lots in Paoli and two in Albany. He lived in a large house across the creek from the church, near the present Earnest Owens’ home. He died March 3, 1861. [Ferguson, p. 288]

13. Remember WOOLSEY, daughter of John WOOLSEY III and Sarah B OLIPHANT , was born on 24 Mar 1781 in France and died in 1814, at age 33.

General Notes:
Oren Shoemaker’s records spell her name “Wolsey” and state, without
reference, that she came from France as a small child. Nothing more isknown of her.
However, a Thomas Woolsey was in Washington Co., VA, at least by 1782because on 12
June 1782 he bought 400 acres adjacent to land of Joseph Cole andJonathan Dean [Redmond
Cole, Mayflower Brief, p. 86]. Frederick Virkus’ Compendium of AmericanGenealogy, Vol. VI
(Chicago: A.N. Marquis and Co., 1925), p. 88, lists underWoolsey“Rev.Thomas (1729-94),
N.Y. to Washington Co., Va., ca. 1770; m. Sarah -;“. Also, Betty Bradyreports that a Jonathan
Dean Sr. m. Mary Woolsey and went to VA from Ulster Co., NY, so thereseems to be a
connection of Woolseys in NY to Woolseys in VA, and possibly Rememberisfrom this family.
There is some disagreement about David’s marriages after the death ofRemember.

Remember married David Mason COLE .

JERI: What a great geneology page, thanks! I am Vice President at Largeof the Sevier Family Association.; the Sevier Family Reunion will be heldJune 17th thru 20th at the Holiday Inn, Pigeon Forge, TN. Anyoneinterested in attending can contact Tom Windle, (President of the SevierFamily Association), at sevier@compuserve.com. His phone number is800-540-0168. Would you believe, I am a descendant of the Sevier, Tipton,Little, and Windle families of Tennessee. John and Katherine Sherrill(Bonnie Kate) Sevier were my 5th great grandparents; their daughter,Joanna, married Joseph Hawkins Windle; their granddaughter, JuliaPermelia Windle, married my great grandfather, Vastine Little, their son,Joseph Windle Little, was my grandfather; he married Maude Beasley. Mymother, Vonda (Little) Conchin, was their only child. Great grandfatherVastine Stickley Little was quite a character; Deputy Sherriff of OvertonCounty, TN and a lawyer. His parents were John Little and ElizabethBarker. John Little's parents were Isaac Little and Alice ElizabethTipton; her father was Abraham Tipton, son of Colonel John Tipton andMartha M. Denton. Abraham's grandparents were Jonathan Tipton andElizabeth Edwards. My cousin, Marinella (Garrett) Charles says that wewould be thrown out of the Sevier Family Association if the "Tipton"connection got out! But perhaps I am redeemed from the Tipton connectionby being related to John Sevier in another way. Mary Little, who marriedAbraham Sevier, brother of John Sevier, was the sister of my fifth GreatGrandfather, Thomas Little.

Of course, there is really no way to know for certain, but I may hold therecord of being related to the most men who fought the Battle of King'sMuntain; John, Abraham, James, Joseph, & Valentine Sevier, Samuel Sr.,Samuel Jr., and Adam Sherrill, Jonathan Tipton, George Barker.

By the way, my great aunt, Cora (Beasley) Wisner, turned 111 on January10th. She is in the Overton County Nursing Home, Livingston, TN.

Thanks again for all the fine work that you do, and I hope that you willreply.

Sincerely,

Bart Conchin

24. Sampson Samuel COLE, son of Joseph COLE Sr and Freelove MASON , was born on 17 Mar 1750 in Bristol County, Massachusetts, died on 25 Jun 1833 in Smyth County, Virginia, at age 83, and was buried in Blankenbecker School Cem, Near Adwolfe. The cause of his death was severed both hands in sawmill accident.

General Notes:
[Redmond Cole, Mayflower Brief, p. 29, apparently computed from gravestone-see below]; m. (1) about
1773 to Keziah Cole, who was b. about 1752 and d. about 1781,the daughter of Israel Cole III, a descendant of Daniel Cole of Eastham, MA, and Remember (Burgess) Cole [Belden Ray Cole, p.
32]. Keziah d. when she fell from a horse with her son David in her arms [Jones MS. p. 13]. Sampson m. (2) Lydia Wheeler, the daughter of Jamesand Abigail Wheeler of NY and VA.
[For a short history of the James Wheeler family, see Redmond Cole, JesseCole, p. 140. Another source cited by Clifton is James Wheeler and His Descendants of "Concord" Near Paintsville, Kentucky, Johnson County.1735-1981, Chronicle No. 2, by Myrtle Jayne Wheeler Minnix.]
He was a mill operator and surveyor; in 1783 he was constable of his district, and he surveyed the road to the salt mine, now called Saltville, VA. He managed Love's Mill from the time his father established it until he severed both hands, the injury from which he died. [Belden Ray Cole, p. 32].
Sampson and his family lived in Washington Co., VA; when SmythCo.wasorganized in 1832, his land was in the new county.
Sampson d. 25 June 1833, aged 78 years, 3 months, 8 days; Lydia d.25March1841, aged 71 years. Their gravestones still stand in the small cemetery near the Blankenbeckler School below St. Clair Bottom Churchnear Adwolfe.
Redmond Cole says Lydia was b. about 1770, which he no doubt calculated from her gravestone. However, this is probably incorrect, as she would have been only 11 years old when her first child was born.Possibly the grave stone is incorrect or the numbers worn.
Buried in Blackenbecker School cemetery near Adwolfe.
In Sampson's will it provides for his second wife, Lydia Wheeler Cole, and his daughters Keziah Williams, Matha Cole, Anna Stalcup, Elizabeth Patterson, Abigail Tilson and Freelove Anderson. He names his son Jessee and his sons-in-law Andrew Patterson, as executors. He also mentions his deceased son Joseph Cole, and three slaves, Israel and Jacob, whom he wants to choose their own masters and not be sold at public sale. He also frees Fanny, another slave, and provides for her out of the funds of his estate. The full text of the will appears in the Cole Chronicles, Vol III, No. 4, Dec 1988 at pp 113-114.

In Sampson's will, written 22 Feb 1833, The will was proved on 18 July 1833. [Smyth Co. Will Book A, pp. 8-10; the full text, transcribed with correct spelling by Ruth Johnson, appears in theCole Chronicle, Vol. III, No. 4 (Dec 1988), pp. 113-114]
The son Sampson names as deceased, Joseph, was not included in Redmond Cole's abstract of Sampson's will [Redmond Cole, MayflowerBrief,p. 83].Possibly he overlooked his name in the will. William Jones does not mention Joseph in his manuscript either. Since Joseph was not named in Israel Cole's 1792 will when he named the children of his daughter Keziah (discussion below), Joseph was either deceased at that time or was the son of Sampson's second wife, Lydia. Sampson's will directs the sale of"three tracts or parcels of land one adjoining my home tract formerly belonging to my son Joseph Cole, deceased." If Joseph had died before1792, he would probably not have been old enough to own land. Therefore,he was probably the son of Lydia.
One son, Samuel, was not mentioned in the will. Redmond Colesays:"Thereare abundant records showing that he had such a son. SamuelColewent tolive in Carter County Tennessee. There he acquired a tractofland. Theselands he sold to his brother Jesse and 'went West'. Atthetime this willwas drawn Samuel Cole was in the far west. Thisprobablyaccounts for thefact he was not mentioned in the above will."[RedmondCole, MayflowerBrief, Appendix I, p. 83]
Another possible son, William R. Cole, was also not mentioned inthewill, nor is he mentioned by any other source but Clifton, who wastoldofWilliam's existence by Myrtle Cole, husband of Ernest Cole, whowasWilliam's son. It is possible that this is incorrectinformation,soWilliam is not listed below as one of the children.
The will of Keziah Cole's father, Israel Cole, was written on 13June1792in Washington Co., VA, and proved 16 Oct 1792 [RedmondCole,MayflowerBrief, p. 78-79, Appendix F, which contains the full textofthe will]. Init he names the three children of Keziah in the orderoftheir birth:Keziah Cole, Samuel Cole, David Cole.

Children: (Sampson and Keziah Cole Cole)

i. Keziah Cole, b. 1774 [Belden Ray Cole, p. 4]
ii. Samuel Cole, b. 23 Jan 1776 in Washington Co., VA [Belden RayCole,p.4]
iii. David Cole, b. 9 Nov 1777 in Washington Co., VA [Shoemaker]/_____May 1778 [Belden Ray Cole, p. 4]

30. Charles RENEAU, son of John RENO and Susannah THORN(E) , was born on 14 Mar 1754 in Fauquier Co. VA and died on 4 Aug 1828 in Albany, Cumberland Co. KY, at age 74.

General Notes: Sinking Creek Baptist Church records lists Charles

From "History of Washington Co. TN" by the Watauga Association of
Genealogy

64. Charles RENEAU (5)(1) (2) was born on 14 Mar 1754 in Jonesboro,
Carter, Tennessee. He died on 4 Aug 1828 in Albany, Cumberland, KY. He
was buried in 6 Miles From Alb, , KY. He has Ancestral File number
4NK6-K1. Charles Reno was in Washington County, North
Carolina/Tennessee from 1788 through 1795. Records show he was a Pvt.
First Class, Capt. Charles Reed's 2nd Company, 4th Battalion,
Washington County (Pa) Militia in the Revolutionary War. He may have
received land in Washington County, Pa., for his service in the
Revolutionary War. No record has been found that Charles ever resided
in Western Pennsylvania after he was grown, or owned land there, even
though his father and brothers William, Benjamin, and Francis did.
Charles was apparently a land speculator. There are many recorded
deeds running to and from him in Carter County, Tenn., and in
Washington County, Tenn.
Charles is shown on "A Register of Members of Sinking Creek Baptist
Church, Book I to 1791" as being a member [Sketch of Sinking Creek
Baptist Church, by Fred F. Hinkle, Church Historian] . At one time he
was "defellowshipped" by the church for "arguing and leaving the
church in a rude and angry manner" but apparently he was later
restored in good standing. "Record Book I, January 13, 1787 thru
August 13, 1791," p. 10, says: "July the 01:1790 at a monthly meeting
met according appointment met to Gether and Proseeds Busnesses as
follows Charles Reno Requests a Coppy of his Excommunication and it is
Granted to him and that is for obscenting him Self from the Church and
for Refussing to hear the Church." [Sketch of Sinking reek Baptist
Church, by fred F. Hinkle, Church Historian] Charles was one of the
"schoolmasters" of Hughes School in the Sinking Creek Community. It is
thought that he moved to Muddy Creek area of Jefferson County, Tenn.,
and that Elizabeth died there.
When Charles' eldest son John moved to Albany, Kentucky (near the
Tennessee-Kentucky line), it appears he went with him, died there, and
was buried there, but no burial spot has been found. John and his
cousin, John Harris Reno, went to Overton County, Tenn. (now Pickett
County) in 1788 and entered land there. Later John Harris and his wife
sold their land to cousin John.
Records of Sinking Creek Baptist Church, 13 Jan 1787 to 13 Aug 1791,
list as members Charles Reno, Elizabeth Tipton, Samuel Tipton, John
Reno, Catherine Reno, William Reno, and Frances Tipton. The records
also mention a dispute involving Jonathan Mulkey on 13 Apr 1794; and
Sarah Reno found guilty of fornication on 13 Feb. 1796. Records for
Carter County, TN show that Samuel Tipton sold land in what is now the
town of Elizabethton to Charles Reneau on Oct. 4, 1796, and Joseph
Tipton sold land to Charles on Jan. 20, 1806. About 1808 John Reno
died and left his farm to his son Charles, who sold it to Nathaniel
Taylor.
In an article in The Colonial Genealogist, 1978, Vol. 9 No. 3, "The
Tiptons of Tennessee: an effort to straighten out the line", Dollye
McAlister Elliott presents evidence that Charles' wife Elizabeth
Tipton was the daughter of Jonathan Tipton and his third wife
Elizabeth Adams, and the sister or half-sister of Joseph Tipton and
the half-sister of Colonel John Tipton.

He was married to Elizabeth TIPTON on 12 Oct 1772 in Jonesboro,
Carter, Tennessee. Elizabeth TIPTON(5) (6)(1) (2) was born in 1757 in
Jonesboro, Carter, Tennessee. She died in 1822 in , Carter, TN. She
has Ancestral File number 4NK6-L6. Charles RENEAU and Elizabeth TIPTON
had the following children:

+153 i. John RENO.
+154 ii. Sarah RENEAU.
155 iii. William RENO(5) (6)(1) (2) was born on 25 Nov 1775 in
Shenandoah, Fredick, VA. He died on 31 Aug 1777 in Jonesboro, Carter,

and died August 04, 1828 in Jonesboro, Carter co., Tenn..

Notes for CHARLES RENO, D.A.R. PATRIOT OF REVOLUTION:

32. CHARLES RENO (JOHN4, LEWIS3, LOUIS2 REYNAUD, LOUIS1) was born
March 14, 1754 in Fauquier Co., Virginia, and died August 04, 1828 in
Albany, Cumberland Co., KY. He married ELIZABETH TIPTON August 08,
1771 in Shenandoah Co., VA, daughter of FELIX THORNTON and MARY HOLLY.
(That's NOT right!)

Notes for CHARLES RENO:

His name appears in the Daughters of the American Revolution Patriot
Index, indicating that he served in the Revolutionary War as a private
from Pennsylvania.

Records of Sinking Creek Baptist Church, 13 Jan 1787 to 13 Aug 1791,
list as members Charles Reno, Elizabeth Tipton, Samuel Tipton, John
Reno, Catherine Reno, William Reno, and Frances Tipton. The records
also mention a dispute involving Jonathan Mulkey on 13 Apr 1794; and
Sara Reno found guilty of fornication on 13 Feb. 1796.

Records for Carter County, TN; show that Samuel Tipton sold land in
what is now the town of Elizabethton to Charles Reneau on Oct. 4,
1796, and Joseph Tipton sold land to Charles Reno on Jan. 20, 1806.

About 1808 John Reno died and left his farm to his son Charles, who
sold it to Nathaniel Taylor.

CHARLES RENO (JOHN4, LEWIS3, LOUIS2 REYNAUD, LOUIS1) was born March
14, 1754 in Fauquier Co., Virginia78, and died August 04, 1828 in
Clinton Co., KY78. He married ELIZABETH TIPTON August 08, 1771 in
Frederick Co., VA, which later became Shenandoah Co.79, daughter of
JONATHAN TIPTON and ELIZABETH ADAMS. She was born 1757 in Frederick
Co., VA80, and died August 04, 1828 in Carter Co., TN80.

Notes for CHARLES RENO:

Charles Reno was in Washington County, North Carolina/Tennessee from
1788 through 1795. Records show he was a Pvt. First Class, Capt.
Charles Reed's 2nd Company, 4th Battalion, Washington County (Pa)
Militia in the Revolutionary War. He may have received land in
Washington County, Pa., for his service in the Revolutionary War. No
record has been found that Charles ever resided in Western
Pennsylvania after he was grown, or owned land there, even though his
father and brothers William, Benjamin, and Francis did. Charles was
apparently a land speculator. There are many recorded deeds running to
and from him in Carter County, Tenn., and in Washington County, Tenn.
