General Notes: I have seen no positive information to support that Spilsbe was a son of James Daniel Sr., as suggested by Connie "Corky" Spurlock. There is more circumstantial and collateral data to support his connection to William and Elizabeth Coleman DANIEL.
He lived in Virginia for 20 years after the War then moved to KY & TN. in about 1800.
1813~Wayne County, Kentucky Marriage Bonds ~ Leopold Cronneally [probably CRONLEY] and Elizabeth ASBURY, 02 JUN 1813, Consent proved by oath of Spilsby Daniel. ~ "Proof he was here... but maybe just passing through, and not a resident. As I said, I think the original Sarah 'Sally' DANIEL was deceased by now, 1813, and the one applying for his benefits in the 1850s was #2 Sally... or he would have been on a census during this time period... he was visiting and scouting.... for a new bride." The tax list for Clinton County, Kentucky show a Spilsby Daniel being taxed as late as 1854 which would indicate that the taxes are showing a son named Spilsby.
1834~05 JUN Spilsby Daniel applies for Revolutionary War Pension from Fentress County, TENNESSEE
1834~11 NOV. Thomas Daniel pays bill for Spilsby Daniel at Paoli General Store, Clinton County, Kentucky [Spilsby would have been about 74/75 years of age in 1834... a proud man who could no longer bring in the 'bread' and had maybe moved 'up the road a ways' to be near children.]
Spilsby married Sara "Sally" Asbury in 1784. She was in the line of Benjamin Asbury & Frances Brown. She was not the sister to Hannah who married Henning Daniel. Sally was age 73(?) on 24 Sep. 1857. Ref: Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files.
In 1858, his wife Sally Asbury applied for Spilsby's pension as his widow. All property taxes place Spilsby in the Maiden Spring area of Russell and then Tazewell County. Sally said that her husband had past away six years earlier, placing his death date at 1852.

On this 3d day of June in the year 1834, personally appeared in openCourt before the County Court of Russell county aforesaid now sitting,Abraham Crabtree, a resident of the said County of Russell and State ofVirginia, aged eighty four years, on the 6th day of the present month whobeing first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make thefollowing declarations in order to obtain the benefit of the provisionsof the Act of Congress, passed June 7, 1834.
That he entered the service of the United States under the followingnamed officers and served as herein stated, viz: in the year 1774 and inthe latter part of the month of August of that year, (he being at thattime a resident of Washington County in the State of Virginia), hebelonged to a Militia Company then under the command of Capt. JamesThompson, and by whom he was commanded to march in the latter part of thesaid month of August to a fort upon Clinch River then and ever sincecalled and known by the name of Blackmores Fort. That they were then upona spying expedition against the hostile Indians who were then committingconstant depredations and massacres upon the frontier settlers upon theWestern border of Virginia then in a condition almost defenceless. Thathe remained spying upon and defending that part of the frontier in thevicinity of the said fort for forty days and was then permitted to returnto their respective homes without having any engagement with the Indians, who about that time killed and scalped a man by the name of Dale Carterand took five boys as prisoners, that he then remained at home a few daysand was appointed a Sergent in the company of the said Captain JamesThompson, and remained stationed in the immediate neighborhood of King'sSaltworks for two months longer, at which time the soldiers who hadmarched from the same region of country against the Shawnee tribe ofIndians returned, bringing with the intelligence that Col. Lewis hadsucceeded in defeating the Indians at the battle of the point, and hissuccess in negociating a treaty of peace, and this putting an end topresent difficulties, whereupon the said Abrahim Crabtree with hiscomrades in the service were then discharged and returned to theirrespective homes where they expected tp remain in peace.
that in the year 1776 in the month of June he the said Abraham Crabtreewas appointed by Col. Arthur Campbell as an Indian Spy to range fromHarrison's Fort in Washington County near the said Saltworks, up and downthe valley of the North Fork of Holston River, and continued to range asan Indian Spy regularly from the time he commenced for the space of 80days, at which time Col. William Christy ordered the said Crabtree with asmall detachment to take up the line of march against the CherokeeIndians upon Tennessee river, with orders to rendezvous at the LongIslands of Holston River, at which place they joined the main army raisedfor that expedition under the command of the said Col. William Christy. At which time he belonged to the Company commanded by Capt. Aaron Lewis. That pursuant to his ordes he did rendezvous at the Long Island aforesaidand remained there three or four days and took up the line of march tothe Indian towns and at the three springs he the said Crabtree was takenwith what was then called the slow fever and being unable to march wassent back again under the care of Thomas Ramsey to the Long Islands wherehe was placed under Major Anthony Blucher who then had the command of theFort at that place. The said Crabtree continuing very ill and altogetherunable to perform any duty it was proposed that he should be committed tothe Military Hospital. The said Crabtree being however unwilling to go tothe hospital, obtained permission from Major Blutcher to be placed at thehouse of the said Thomas Ramsey about three miles distant from the saidfort, at which place he remained from that time drawing his regularrations as a soldier in actual service until the last week in February1777 when he was taken home by his brother and his own wife who cameafter him.
That in the summer of 1777 and also in the summer of 1778 he each yearremained stationed at Harrisons fort and Vance's fort in the County ofWashington, But was during that tiem measurably unable to render anyessential service to his country except some garrison duty. That he hasno documentary evidence of his services and never had any writtendischarge from his officers. That he can produce some evidence of hisservices if ever he shall be able to procure it but from hiscircumstances in life which are very limited and humble and from personaldiability, he fears he will not be able to get the necessary proof intime to relieve him from his present wants. He hereby relinquishes everyclaim whatever to a pension or an annuity, except the present, anddeclares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of anyState. Abraham married Mary LEWIS in 1778.
Children from this marriage were:
5 i. Mary CRABTREE (born in 1783 in Washington Co Virginia - died on 22 Aug 1840 in Wayne Co KY)
ii. Solomon CRABTREE was born on 18 Feb 1779 in Washington Co Virginia and died on 22 Dec 1863, at age 84.
iii. Ruth CRABTREE was born in 1783 in Washington State and died on 22 Aug 1840 in Wayne County Kentucky, at age 57.
iv. Unknown CRABTREE . The cause of her death was died as infant.
v. Wesley CRABTREE .
11. Mary LEWIS, daughter of Thomas LEWIS and Jane IDDINGS , was born in 1753 and died in 1829, at age 76.
Mary married Abraham CRABTREE in 1778.
16. James DANIEL, son of James DANIEL II and Mary CHAPMAN , was born in 1725-1729 and died in 1764, at age 39.
General Notes: General Notes: Mrs. Christine Gee reports that the settlement of the James Daniel estate was Dec. 17, 1764, Essex County Book 29, page 347, and that Land Deeds and Transfers proved that this James is the son of James who left will in1742 in Essex County, Va. This presumption does not appear to be true. John Daniel the brother of this James would be the ancestor of Mrs. Christine S. Gee of Greenwood, SC.
In the settlement of James Daniel's estate Dec. 17, 1764 (Essex Co. Book29, pg. 347), two Daniel females are identified. (1) A daughter, Ann Daniel, who appears to be "of age" as she signs the settlement, and (2)Mary Daniel, an infant, who appears to be a ward of the son Harrison as he signs for her. We do not know if Mary Daniel, the infant, is the daughter of a deceased brother (as some speculate), or a sister. If Mary Daniel was a sister, either she or Ann Daniel, probably married a "Sneed". This is determined from the fact that in Harrison Daniel's will dated Feb. 16, 1813 in Caroline Co., he identifies a niece "Sukey Sneed wife of Alexander in KY". The Caroline Co., VA marriage records show a Sukey "Sneed", m. Alexander Sneed, Jan 11, 1795. The will of Alexander Sneed, dated 6 Dec. 1816, (Mercer Co., KY Will Book 6, pg. 109, Recorded Aug. 1818), identifies his wife as "Susanna". From the above, it appears that either Ann or Mary Daniel (if she was a sister), married a "Sneed", and was the mother of this Susanna "Sukey" (Sneed) Sneed.
Also in Harrison Daniel's will, two daughters of his brother James are identified as having married Samuel and John Sneed. One was Mary "Polly"Daniel who married Samuel Sneed, September 30, 1797 in Caroline Co., VA. The name of the one who married John Sneed has not been identified. Ref: Joe C. Daniel (JoeD494005@aol.com)
James married Priscilla HARRISON . Priscilla was born between 1700-1712 and died after 1764 in Caroline/Essex, VA.
Children from this marriage were:
+ 15 M i. James DANIEL died in Caroline County, VA.
+ 16 M ii. John DANIEL Sr. was born between 1724-1742 in Virginia and died in 1819 in Laurens, SC.
17 M iii. Harrison DANIEL was born before 1742 and died in 1814 in Caroline County, VA.
General Notes: His will was dated February. 16, 1813. See Caroline County will Book, he only Caroline will book in existence before the Civil War. Charles Heinemann says Harrison's will was proved in 12 Dec. 1814, in Caroline County, VA.
Note: This Harrison Daniel has also been listed as a son of William Daniel, Jr., and wife Tabitha Harrison. Christine Gee, "John Daniel, Sr.1724-1819 of Essex Co., VA and Laurens, SC". I believe this date of 1724is incorrect and should be 1742. Other Notes: 11/06/00

GENEALOGIAL NOTES ON THE SOUTH FAMILY by Christine South Gee-p 123...James Daniel and wife Priscilla HARRISON settlement of estate of James in 1764, Essex Co. Bk 29 p 347, names wife Priscilla, sons John, James, Harrison, daughters Mary, Ann, a daughter who m Conduitt, a daughter who m Farmer...Priscilla Harrison, above, was the daughter of Robert Harrison of Richmond Co, VA. Robert Harrison's will 1719, shows sons Robert, Aaron, who were to receive the land Robert had inherited from Adam Woofendall 1678. Woofendall's will leaves 350 acres to his son HARRISON and to his son Strother with Harrison to have first choice. Also a son, Francis, the rest of his land, but if Francis will not be ruled by his mother, my will is that he should live with son Harrison. Essex County on August 17, 1742. Will Book 6, pg. 380 dated June 7, 1731 & proved in court Aug. 17, 1742, St. Anne's Parish, Essex County, Virginia. The writer has a photocopy of the will. James of Essex claimed he was 30 years of age on 10 September 1694 -Essex County Records - 1692-95 page 315. James was living on land he bought from Robert Payne in 1704. He was the only Daniel listed on the list of tithables in Essex County. It has been suggested in documents that James Daniel of Essex was closely tied to Robert Payne, perhaps his son-in-law. Essex Co. VA records1717-1722 Pg. 15,16; however this is unlikely since Robert Payne was a general land speculator and sold to many county residents.

The birthplace is speculation since most early ancestors were brought in from England; however, William "Bill" Daniel suggest Rappahannock, Va. It is noted in early families of Virginia that James Daniel was in Essex County in 1704.
Children from this marriage were:
+ 2 M i. James DANIEL II was born in 1680 and died in 1778 in St. Ann's Parrish, Essex County, VA, at age 98.
+ 3 M ii. William DANIEL was born between 1683-1687 in Essex County, VA and died in Jul 1765 in Essex/Caroline County, VA.
4 M iii. John DANIEL was born about 1687.
General Notes: The following is a direct copy from Heinemann 1949 Volume II and should be taken for what it is worth. I have assigned this John as the son of James and not his brother.
4) JOHN DANIEL, born C 1687; died A 1746. The information on this man is meager. Judge W. B. Newman reported that he and his wife, FRANCES, deeded land in Essex County, Va., July 1, 1746. It mentioned his brother, JAMES. Mr. Ray claims he was the JOHN DANIEL who left a will in Granville Co., N. C. in 1778. It mentioned his wife, CELIA, and a son, MARTIN DANIEL. His brother, WILLIAM DANIEL, was named executor. We cannot accept this, for the Judge Newman record shows the brother (3) JAMES DANIEL, died in 1742, and that the brother (2) WILLIAM DANIEL, had died in 1765. He married (???). They had: Nos. 30 to 34 reserved.

(Worth Ray's COLONIAL GRANVILLE AND ITS PEOPLE, p 261) Thomasine Harrison was the daughter of HARMON HARRISON (p 258) who came to Jamestown on Christopher Newport's 3rd voyage in 1608-9. It was believed for a long time that Harmon died of disease, but after many years of study of the Harrison family, Mr. Ray believes that Harmon survived the Indian massacres, married a sister of ANDREW HILL, and became the ancestor of many of the Harrison who have puzzled genealogists for a long time
Andrew married Thomasine WHITEHEAD .
