She Will Be Loved
Song: She Will Be Loved - Maroon 5
[1/1]

Beauty queen of only eighteen
She had some trouble with herself

Rory Gilmore was beautiful. That’s the first thing that Jess remembered about her. She had been just seventeen when they started their journey together, a journey that could last a lifetime.

He was always there to help her
She always belonged to someone else

She had been his greatest friend in Stars Hollow, something he would never admit. They talked and shared and she was everything to him. But there was always Dean there, looming over them, keeping his eyes open.

And when he came to Stars Hollow the second time, she greeted him with a kiss, their first kiss, full of passion and excitement. He thought that maybe, maybe now she was his. But Dean was still there.

Then the fateful dance marathon, she was finally his; his to hold and to kiss. And all though in his heart he knew how lucky he was, his head took advantage of her. He treated her like crap, something she didn’t deserve.

Yet now, 3 years after he’d left he was heading back.

I drove for miles and miles
And wound up at your door
I've had you so many times but somehow
I want more

He stood in front of her dorm room door. He’d traveled there from the middle of Ohio, where he’d been for the past year. He wanted to redeem himself, finally say he was sorry for being the bastard he was.

His fist knocked at the door and she opened it. She was even more beautiful that he had remembered.

Her mouth was moving and her angry voice engulfed Jess. But he didn’t hear a word, he just looked at her. She mesmerized him, after all these years, she still had this effect on him.

The door slammed in his face before he could say anything.

I don't mind spending everyday
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay awhile

Jess stood outside her dorm at Yale. Not knowing what to do next. The rain soaked his hair and fell down his face.

He’d spent the last night in his car and now he was waiting for her to return. There hadn’t been an answer at her dorm this time.

She came walking up the path to the building, Dean looming at her side. Jess backed himself up to the patch of trees as he watched them enter the building and head up the stairs to his dorm.

And she will be loved
She will be loved

She was with Dean again. Not someone he didn’t know and didn’t have a reason to hate, but Dean; the same guy who had broken up with her because of him.

But he loved her, and Rory seemed happy.

Except for what Jess could see in her eyes. Something was wrong, Dean wasn’t what she needed.

Tap on my window knock on my door
I want to make you feel beautiful
I know I tend to get so insecure
It doesn't matter anymore

Jess stood there longer, watching the door to the building Rory and Dean had disappeared into. Dean emerged and walked backwards away from the building, waving at Rory who stood at a window above.

Dean disappeared around the corner and Rory stood at the window a moment longer as Jess came out of the shadows of the trees. He picked up a small rock and threw it to the window a story above. It tapped against it and bounced back down. Rory looked down, a smile on her face, falling when it feel upon Jess. She turned away from the window, ignoring him.

He ran into the building and up the flight of stairs and knocked on the door of her dorm.

She answered it.

“Why the hell are you here Jess?” She started yelling at him again, this time he could hear her words. “You didn’t mess up my life enough 3 years ago? Now you have to come back? Just when I’m happy? Just leave! For God’s sake, just leave!”

She began to slam the door but Jess caught it. He pushed it open all the way and looked at her standing there. He took a stop towards her and she stepped back.

“Rory,” he said softly taking another step towards her. This time she didn’t step back.

His hand wrapped around her neck and his lips met hers in a passionate kiss. She didn’t respond at first and he pulled away.

“Goodbye Rory,” he said, thinking that she didn’t feel what he had felt.

He turned away from her and walked towards the door when he felt her small hand on his shoulder.

“Don’t leave.”

It's not always rainbows and butterflies
It's compromise that moves us along
My heart is full and my door's always open
You can come anytime you want

Jess ran his finger along the contour of her cheek and she smiled, not only with her mouth, but with her eyes as well.

She moved closer to him under the sheets and lay her head on his bare chest. He kissed the top of her head and they just lay there.

“I don’t speak to Lorelai anymore,” Rory said softly.

Jess’s arms tightened around her. “Why not?”

“Because of Dean; he’s married, has been for two years. Yet I’m with him. And he’s not leaving Lindsey.”

“Then why are you with him?” Jess asked, his curiosity getting the better of him.

“I’m not with him right now. I’m with you.” Rory said quietly.

They lay there like that, in the comfortable silence that had surrounded them.

“Rory, I have to go now,” Jess said softly, lifting himself up from the bed.

“No,” Rory murmured, half-asleep. “I don’t want you to go.”

“I’ll be back in a few weeks,” Jess said as he pulled on his pants and shirt and leaning over to kiss her on the forehead.

I don't mind spending everyday
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay awhile

Two weeks later he stood outside her dorm again. There hadn’t been an answer when he knocked so he stood by those very same trees he’d hidden in last time. Rain still pouring down on him.

Rory came up the side walk, arm in arm with Dean.

Why had he returned? It wasn’t like she was going to leave Dean over him.

Feeling stupid Jess turned around and headed to his car.

And she will be loved
She will be loved

At least she wasn’t alone. Dean loved her. Hopefully he would love her enough to leave Lindsey for her. Not to hurt her anymore.

I know where you hide
Alone in your car
Know all of the things that make you who you are
I know that goodbye means nothing at all
Comes back and begs me to catch her every time she falls

She saw him walking into his car that morning on her way to class. She ran to him, yelling his name, her voice asking him to stop.

“I can’t stay Rory,” Jess said. “I can’t drive for hours to see you with him. I can’t drive just to sleep with you when you’re still with him. Goodbye Rory Gilmore. Goodbye forever.”

Tears began to run down her face as he walked into his car.

Tap on my window knock on my door
I want to make you feel beautiful

I don't mind spending everyday
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay awhile

Yet a week later Jess stood outside her dorm again, watching her come up to the building, arm in arm again with Dean.

And she will be loved
And she will be loved
And she will be loved

No matter how much Dean pretended to love her, if he really loved her he would leave Lindsey.

But Rory would always be loved. Jess would love her as long as he lived and she knew that.

Please don't try so hard to say goodbye
Please don't try so hard to say goodbye

He couldn’t say goodbye forever. He still stood outside her building, watching her. She knew he was there, but she never ventured to speak to him, and he never approached her.

Until one day.

Yeah
I don't mind spending everyday
Out on your corner in the pouring rain

Standing in the rain again Jess emerged from the trees as Rory came up to her dorm alone.

“I can’t stand this anymore Rory. Leave him.”

“He left me,” she said softly. “He and Lindsey are having a baby, he said he wanted to be honest again.” She sniffed. “Would you like to come up?” She asked motioning towards the dorm.

Jess stiffened, he didn’t want to sleep with her again, especially not when she was so vulnerable.

“Just to talk?” She asked again.

“I’m finally saying goodbye Rory. I’m not going to come here again. But I’ll see you again Rory, don’t you doubt that.”

Rory nodded and walked up towards the building and as she opened the door she turned around, and for the first time she said the words she’d regretted never being able to say to him.

“Goodbye Jess.”

Try so hard to say goodbye
