On Eagle's Wings
Chapter 7

Lorelai's pace gradually slowed down as she, as well as Luke, approached the house. She reached the front lawn and completely stopped all movement.

"Lorelai?" Luke asked softly. "Why did you stop? Rory's inside. You need to get to Rory."

Lorelai swallowed and nodded slowly as she took a step towards the door. Luke remained behind her, knowing it was her battle, she needed to get her daughter herself.

She was only halfway to the door when a crack sounded from the house. Followed by a crash.

Again, she stopped in her tracks. Caught between the fear in the house and the safeness outside.

"Lorelai," Luke said, trying to give her hope as he walked up beside her, knowing she couldn't go into that house alone. Knowing that Carl had a gun, that he could, he would, kill her. "Lorelai, we need to get your daughter. We need to get Rory."

Her eyes widened in fear, as if only just remembering that her daughter was inside with Carl. Her daughter was in danger and needed to be saved.

And she was the one who needed to save her.

She placed her hand on the doorknob but before she could turn it someone opened it from the inside.

Carl stood in front of her, the gun she had heard only moments before in his hand. Just beyond his looming figure Lorelai saw Rory, collapsed on the floor, blood escaping from her head.

And she screamed.

She screamed at the sight.

She screamed at Carl for what he had done to her daughter.

She screamed at Carl for what he had done to her.

She screamed at herself for letting it go on for so long.

Everything around her became a blur as Carl tried to throw her out of the way. Her fists went flying, only meeting air. She kicked and screamed: "You'll never get away with this! Never!"

She heard the running of footsteps as Luke ran towards her. She heard the crack of the gun that Carl held and out of the corner of her eye she saw Luke fall to the ground.

The tiniest bit of sense and reason that was left in Lorelai Gilmore's head disappeared the moment she saw her best friend, the one who had made her realize what Carl was doing to them, fall to the ground. She whipped around towards Carl, grabbed his gun and aimed.
