Matt Loveless(Cap'N CorpseDaddyTo Cap'N Fans!) Interview!

Me:Lets Start with the Deceased Cap'n Gruesome, I was a huge fan as you already know, How did the idea behind Cap'N Gruesome come to be? and why did you guys split?

Matt:The inspiration that bore Cap’n Gruesome was actually a small town festival lasting but one night known as the High School Battle of the Bands. We just came up with the band so we could have a reason to throw buckets of gore on stage, have a "prop" guitarist who wasn’t plugged in, but pretended to play (who, in the videotape, visibly takes his hand away from the guitar and wipes his nose numerous times), break an acoustic guitar and slam a chair over the heads of the imposters we had open up the set while we hid in the back and really played the instruments, and finally get disqualified from the contest. 4 out of 5 were accomplished. The bucket of gore was relinquished before we got to pour it over the head of the guy who attempted to tell jokes and introduce each band.

Matt:We played for about 60 seconds, then after the second song Chuck was dedicating the next one to "the boys in the back" but either heard a misguided comment rise from the front row of the audience, which was polluted with guys who were there to taunt everyone, or he saw them throw something on stage as they were the entire evening, and immediately his attention turned from his thoughtful dedication to an orgy of violence and seething diabolical hatred. He threw venomous words at them like spears, and then threw his drumsticks at them like…spears. He then seized the mic, spat more venom (this time amplified until they cut the audio), threw a chair, and proceeded to the back, where principles were scrambling around the hallways to apprehend the fiend. The police were called, we were disqualified (my second time that evening, as my first band was disqualified due to the male stripper who was undressed by the female strippers…He was suspended) Needless to say, the whole thing went over beautifully, so we thought it appropriate to continue the project and change the name from the temporary "Horrific Expulsion of Gore" to Cap’n Gruesome and the Gore Whores.

Matt:We played some local shows, self-produced an LP and a split CD. Got strung out on buttrock beyond all return, and luckily faded away before that got laid down on tape. Actually, it looked like we were going to get some good stuff together, but since our fan base is mostly concentrated in Tennessee (?) the local soil could not sustain our needs, and Cap’n Gruesome fell.

Me:Do you think you and Chuck will ever play together again in the future? I thought you two made an awesome combination!

Matt:There is rumor of a mega metalhead jam this upcoming summer, but we await a special guest. I’m sure Chuck and I will do something at some point.

Me:I loved your vocals in Cap'N Gruesome, any chance of you doing vocal work again on future projects?

Matt:Yeah, it’s just another instrument, so chances are high. The current project seems to be mostly instrumental.

Me:Speaking of new Projects, You have mentioned starting a new musical project, Could you give a little info on that? and how is it coming along?

Matt:Yes, it’s new if you consider a two-year-old child new that has been born, named, and had its life completely planned, yet without physical contact, feeding, or even acknowledgement from its parents. No, actually It is named Capra Chorea or Goatdance or whatever variation you like. It’s my passion, and it should be triumphant, as so much music has been written, but we’re still getting it together equipment wise, and just generally trying to harness such a massive thing with only two musicians and so little time. It looks like it will awaken soon.

Me:I Almost Completely Forgot, about "as eyes film over", Altho I only heard two song by the band, I really enjoyed it, What Happen to "As Eyes Film Over"?

Matt:That kind of faded away too, as members went to college and got too far away from each other. The true death of that band was our inability to find a drummer that was dependable and skilled. But, we wouldn’t be where we are now if that was still going on, so it was good for that time, but none of us are at the same place we were when we played in Æfo or Cap’n Gruesome. Alas…

Me:You have played a few live shows, what moment stands out to you the most to you that you can recall? while playing live that is.

Matt:throwinggorethrowingexcessmeatfatanddiseasedcutletsthatourlivebassistbutcherpackagedup Chuckthrowingdrumsticksthrowingthings

Matt:The 30 ft. worm. Something a little beautiful during a guiltless sleep in a barn.

Me:Just out of curiosity, Back to Cap'N Gruesome, Do you think The Concept of "and the Gore Whores" was a mistake to associate with Cap'N Gruesome in a whole?
T
Matt:here’s no mistakes and no "whole" with Cap’n Gruesome. Except the buttrock. The Whores were fun (Keith, Laura, Julia, Lisa, Yuri, James, Jerrold, Chris, Dan, Joel, DEATH Margush, and everybody else). We severed that dangling appendage when we felt it was right to let Cap’n Gruesome be on his own. Then we didn’t make any more music…Maybe the whores were the real spirit of the band after all. What have we done?

Me:anyhow, you play a variety of musical Instruments, as well as have taught me alot since we have known each other, Who is is/was your inspiration to play? and how long have you been doing music in general?

Matt:I don’t know why I started playing. I just wanted to play bass for some reason. No real inspiration, maybe just the lack of certain music existing that I want to hear,, so I have to make it for myself. I’ve been playing 9 or 10 years……good god(!?!!!?!). I hadn’t realized.

Me:If you had the chance, to tour with any band(s), who would they be?

Matt:Like-minded people, I imagine. If we’re talking Capra Chorea, then I think nice things would come to pass playing with bands like Neurosis, Today Is The Day, Led Zeppelin, In Gowan Ring, Cattlepress, Isis, Thrones, SUNN 0))), Khanate, Amber Asylum, maybe Godspeed You! Black Emperor (if I thought it would be appropriate for us to play with them), Nick Drake, Cathedral, Do Make Say Think, Neil Young, Steve Von Till.

Me:and finally, this is somewhat of an honor to do this interview with you for my site, considering we have know each other for over 2 years now(my does time fly), you have been a Huge inspiration to me musically and metally, How does it know that you are such a huge influence?

Matt:Well, your influence on me personally rivals my influence on you musically, I bet. I think it’s great that you’ve enjoyed Cap’n Gruesome so much. Now it has meaning beyond merely the grotesque.
