whatever the case may be

cleaned out
the sink drain today
on hands and knees
half-swallowed in the
cupboard beneath the counter
failing miserably in
the operation of a pipe wrench
choking stoically
on the smell of the gunk
that covered my hands

shall be going
to prom this saturday
straight and tall
gowned in
periwinkle blue satin
attempting smilingly
to use the correct fork -- and waltz
inhaling deeply
the perfume of the corsage
that will be on my wrist

yet i
was and shall be
the same girl both times
beneath the
slime-smeared skin
or upswept hair
whatever the case may be--

still me
