i skinned my knee yesterday
in the shower where knees ought to be
smoothed rather than skinned but
i slipped with the razor
and the blood streamed crimson in the hard water
without tears
no red badge of courage like daddy used to say just
a technological achievement of cotton and latex
to cover my wound

today it hurt to peel off and
left me holding a brownish smudge of my
humanity
