Do I really want to breed?
Do not think that one has to mate a bitch. It is not true. Lots of women go through life quite happily and healthily without reproducing. It is the same for dogs. I do advise however, that if you decide to spay your bitch or neuter your male you wait until they are old enough to know what they are. I advise my people to wait until 18 months or the third season before spaying their girls and then make sure it is halfway between seasons (about 3 months after the last one). They can become incontinent if spayed at the wrong time. In the case of boys I advise at least a year. Then they know what it is like to be a boy or girl. When they are neutered too soon they can be like little eunuchs and they lose that bright Shiba personality.
It is not good enough to use any old dog on your girl. In Momos' case I studied pedigrees and looked for a male with lines that matched up to mine five or so generations back. I line breed keeping the good genes and breeding away from undesired ones. Her parents were quite closely related so I bred her to an unrelated male.
Care of the bitch
In the early stages there is nothing to do. At three weeks after mating she can be scanned for pups. You then know how many to plan for.. I use PetScan near Milton Keynes. Domini is a lovely lady who takes endless time and trouble to get good scans as you can see from the one here.
Once you know your bitch is in whelp get your whelping pen ready and collect a box of goodies in time for the great event.
I treat my girls homoeopathically and give them a eugenic treatment advised by Wolfe. This is only necessary once in a lifetime.
Keep a diary because each pregnancy is a bit different and it gives you a point of reference for future events. My puppy book goes back 25 years and has become more detailed with each litter.
If you need any help just give me a call. Now back to Momo
Momo has her first litter
Domini had advised that it would be the 9th and sure enough it was! She had me up twice during the night of the 8th but really started contractions at 7.30 the morning. She had her first boy at 7.50 followed quickly by the second boy. The sesame boy followed at 8.25am. As you can see from the photo below Shibas are very clean when they whelp. #1 boy weighed 9oz, #2, 8oz and #3, 9oz. They were all fit and healthy and started at the milk bar straight away. Pups always lose weight at the beginning so when I weighed them on day 2# although they looked bigger they weighed less.
#1 boy was 8oz, #2, 6oz and #3, 7oz.. I had been sleeping downstairs with them on a camp bed but as she was such a good mum I returned to my own bed (shared with 15 year old Sonny). I continued weighing and photographing them daily until they were a week old and then only weigh them weekly on a Monday.
Below are pictures of them as they grow older. Their eyes and ears aren't open yet so it important that they get to know the loving human smell. I only let trusted friends of mine and Momo handle the pups.
I cut their nails yesterday 21/09/13.
I will worm both the pups and the older Shibas tomorrow when they are two weeks old. It is so important to socialise Shibas from day one. As I don't have children any more I will kidnap some of the neighbours children who are used to dogs.
Actually it was the 24th when I wormed both the pups and the adults. #1 & #2 boys eyes are open and the sesame boy has one open and one to go.
At week two they weighed #1 boy 1lb 15oz, #2 boy 1lb 9ox and #3 boy 1lb 8 1/4oz. Their eyes are now open They are wormed with Drontal suspension and I also wormed the adult Shibas. They were good boys when I once again cut their nails. I use baby scissors at this age because they are so soft. Our babies are starting to play with each other.
Three weeks and they now have pet names. I will probably keep the big boy (as long as he doesn't get too big!). I have named him Kenichi which means Healthy Strong #1 Son. He weighs 2lb 9 1/4oz. Loki the other red weighs 2lb 3/4oz and Titan the sesame also weighs 2lb 3/4oz. They came out of the run for the first time and here is a video of their first day of freedom.
4 weeks. The KC refused the name 'Kenichi' so he is now 'Kenji'. Each day they get bigger and more adventurous. Kenji weighs 3lb 4oz. Loki and Titan now both weigh 2lb 10 oz. Tails are up and eyes and ears wide open. Once again they had their nails cut and were wormed. Such good little boys. They didn't complain about the Drontal being squirted down their throats.
5 weeks and they are really getting about. They have TEETH! I am doing the Basil Fawlty walk. As I no longer have children I borrowed a friends grand-daughter to come and socilise them.
6 weeks today and a very sad day for me as I had to have my old Sonny PTS. Just short of his 15th birthday but he had been so sick for the last four weeks and stopped eating four days ago. It was so hard. Don't think for one moment it gets any easier as time goes by. I think it gets harder. He has given myself and Pete such pleasure throughout his life.
Momo's Firework Litter
Poor Momo had a hard pregnancy with this one. She had morning sickness all the way through and lost her hair due to raging hormones. She also was VERY snappy with her mum Yoshi. Domini scanned her and forecast 6th November but due to the fireworks it became 5th November so I have called this my 'Firework Litter'. She was scanned with two live pups and one partially resorbed (that is when the body resorbs the foetus back into the system). Fingers crossed that nothing would happen to the other two. I had planned this litter hoping for a little red girl for me. The fireworks started and Momo started digging and rushing around the house. She didn't want her whelping pen. She was just beside herself. The first pup appeared at 10.10pm. A red boy. He weighed 8 3/4oz At 10.50pm she produced a red girl who weighed 7 1/2oz. They both looked beautiful and only time will tell if she develops into a show girl. They are both gaining weight at the rate of two ounces a day. Week one they had more than doubled thier weight. Week two and time to cut their nails and start worming. They now are KC registered with Hanabi (Firework) as the girls name and Hidama (Fireball) for the boy. Hanabi's eyes have now opened and both of them can now hear so this is when the fun starts!
