ISRAEL GREEN served under COL. JAMES MCCLAGHEY in the 2nd Reg. Ulster County, NY state militia.

Let's get these marriages for ISRAEL recorded by date. ISRAEL GREEN m. 1765 to SARAH; m. 12/1/1781 Orange Co NY to BETHIA TABITHA OWEN. His children were b. 1769-1787.

One acct says, TABITHY "SARAH" OWENS . I have lots on the OWENS Family if we can prove this is the same ISRAEL GREEN as ours.

BETHIA TABITHA OWEN (GERSHOM, JONATHAN, JOHN, GEORGE) (according to The Descendants of GEORGE OWEN on the Internet) b. abt. 1760 Wallkill, Orange Co, NY m. 12/1/1781 to Israel Green b. abt 1760 in NY. I think I just noticed that this ISRAEL GREEN was b. abt 1760, ours was 1740 so who is this ISRAEL GREEN? Are there more marriages?

HOLLIT TITUS GREEN

HOLLIT TITUS GREEN (STEPHEN, NATHANIEL, ISRAEL, JOHN) b. 1826 NY d. abt. 10/8/1887 or 1884 Wadena, MN
m. 1st 9/6/1846 Middletown, Delaware Co, NY to OLIVE MARIE VOSBURGH (MICHAEL VOSBURGH & CATHERINE BLAISDELL) b. 1832 or 8/1830 d. 1898 or 1904 divorced 9/12/1865 at Dartford, Green Lake Co, WI

HOLLIT TITUS GREEN had a farm near Mr. Tom. They lived in Princeton WI and moved to Wadena Co. 1876. They also lived in Todd Co. He was a merchant in St Marie, Green Lake Co. WI. They moved from NY to WI in 1848. They had lived at Red Biln Farm near Griffin Corners NY.

In 1839 ANGELINE WOODRUFF VAN VLECK's family moved to Brookfield, Wisconsin, now a suburb of Milwaukee. She was 18 years old when, on February 28, 1850, she married (1st) JOHN MITCHELL BANTA at Brookfield, in a double wedding with her sister, JULIA VAN VLECK & DANIEL PUTNAM CARTER.

Soon after her marriage, she and her husband went back to New York to be with others in the family around Amsterdam. While in New York, her first three children were born: JULIA BANTA 1851 in Elmira; JAN ANN BANTA, 1853, and JESSE BANTA, 1854 in Amsterdam.

Around 1855, ANGELINE moved back to Wisconsin with her husband and children and settled near Princeton in Green Lake County. She had four more children: ELLA BANTA b. 1856; FRANK BANTA b. 1857; HENRY BANTA b. 1861; and JOHN BANTA, who died in infancy. In 1856- -only about 1 1/2 months before the end of the Civil War- - JOHN BANTA enlisted in the 49th Regt., Wisconsin Volunteers. Within one month after his enlistment, he died in the Post Hospital at Camp Randall, Madison, Wisconsin.

Apparently because of a poor health condition ANGELINE'S children - - except for JULIA BANTA who had married very young - - were put under a guardianship. At the time of JOHN BANTA'S death he was 37 and ANGELINE BANTA 32.

As his widow, ANGELINE BANTA applied for a pension to support her six children, in May of 1865. Copies of her application show she was assisted by GEORGE MACKEY of Dayton, who with his wife ANN ELIZA MACKEY, signed as witnesses, also indicating they had known JOHN BANTA personally. However, it appears from other papers that she was not granted a pension, it being denied in September, 1865. Sometime that year a Guardianship was set up for the children and GEORGE MACKEY was appointed guardian.

ANGELINE BANTA'S health was bad. She was prone to periodic lung problems requiring treatment that would help her recover but not entirely cure her.

The BANTA'S and the PARKER'S had known each other from the time the two families had arrived in Wisconsin, near Princeton, in 1855. They were also friends of the GREEN family who had arrived about 1851 in that area. In July, 1866, a Federal Act was passed providing for pensions for minor children. In October, 1867, Guardian GEORGE MACKEY completed the pension application for the minors, all of whom were shown in the document; a copy of which was obtained from the National Archives. It appears that a pension was granted this time.

On August 7, 1866, at age 34, she married HOLLIT TITUS GREEN. GREEN had three children by a previous marriage. ANGELINE and HOLLIT had two children: ELIZA GREEN b. 1874 and ANGELINE GREEN b. 1876.

ANGELINE & HOLLIT GREEN moved to Wadena, Minnesota in 1876. ELLA BANTA, her daughter, who married HOLLIT TITUS GREEN'S son, GEORGE GREEN, in 1873, left the farm in South Dakota and moved to Todd County around 1879. She later moved to Wadena Village, in Wadena County.

HOLLIT TITUS GREEN died in 1887 and ANGELINE GREEN is believed to have made her home primarily in Wadena with her daughter, ELLA BANTA GREEN. She did spend some time in Wisconsin and southern Minnesota visiting her other daughters and relatives.

In the late 1890's ANGELINE GREEN lived with ELLA & GEORGE GREEN in Wadena. Her last grandchild, ROLLIT (or) HOLLIT GREEN b. 6/1/1899 in Wadena. She died there on 9/1/1899.

ANGELINE knew some of her grandchildren, but not all since the families were scattered and some had died at an early age. She was probably most familiar with the GEORGE & ELLA GREEN family since she lived with them for several years at various times until her death. She is buried at Wadena, Minnesota.

At one time ANGELINE lived at Princeton WI.

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA
MINNEAPOLIS 14
OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

The following resolution was unanimously adopted by a rising vote of the University Senate at its meeting May 27, 1948N

ROBERT GLADDING GREEN (1895-l947) was a professor of bacteriology in the Medical School for seventeen years, died suddenly on September 8, 1947 a few months after being appointed head of that department to succeed the late Winford P. Larson.

DR GREEN was born in Wadena. Minnesota, January 11, 1895, received his M D. from the University in 1922 and thereafter, except for a short period in the Medical Corps during World War 1, served continuously on the Medical School staff.

Early, he was recognized by DR. LARSON as being a medical student of exceptional promise, he was urged to focus his energies on medical research. Choosing the field of viruses, he soon became an authority on the diseases of fur-bearing animals. These investigations led to the description of "fox encephalitis"-a new virus disease of canines--and to the production of inexpensive vaccines for distemper in foxes and dogs.

In 1935, he proposed the unique theory that "viruses come into existence by degeneration or simplification from visible microbes through a retrograde evolutionary process and that the virus diseases of today are the lineal descendants of the microbic diseases of ages gone by." These views, in turn, led to a study of the relation of the virus to the host cell; thus to growth control and cancer.

Just before his untimely death DR. GREEN was working toward possible immunization against cancer and toward the production of a vaccine against infantile paralysis. According to DR. H. O. HALVORSON, "much of the credit" for the recent concentrated isolation of the human polio virus "should go to DR. ROBERT G. GREEN, late head of the Bacteriology Department. He started us on polio research."

To boldness and originality of ideas he added the capacity of infecting promising youth with the contagion of his own enthusiasm.

SOURCE: Letter dated 15 June 1923 from Frank Harrison Hine, Route 1 Box 428-A, San Jose, CA, to Mrs. Harold Shaw Bareford, 1031 Madison Avenue, Plainfield, NJ.

"Dear Niece,
Your letter written in April, found us as well as usual, but rather busy. My garden and chickens takes a whole lot of my time. We raised a hundred baby chicks this year. Besides four dozen laying hens, so that takes some steps.

I haven't heard from Myrtle in a long time. You did not send her address when you wrote saying she had returned to N.Y.

Your grandfather Hine's name was Luther Alfred. His fathers name was Harrison. That's where I got the Harrison in my name. You know you have quite a few relations on the Hine side of the family scattered through Penn. Father has four sisters, married and I think they all live in Penn. Also one brother who lived at Niagara Falls. My Grandmother Hine was a Wood. I believe that's as far as I know to trace back the stock in that side of the family. The Hine family has been classed as Pennsylvania Dutch, but that's a mistake as both grandfathers and grandmothers were from Connecticut and New Hampshire, so I have been told in my fathers letters to me years ago.

On your grandmothers side there is quite a bunch of relations scattered from Cal. to Boston. As you, of course, know your grandmother was a Denton, her mother was a Whitman, which are traced back through Carpenters and Greenes. That's where Gen. Greene claims relation to us, he being some form of an uncle. I suppose you understand how the Lobdells are related, Jake Lobdell's mother was a Denton, sister to grandfather Denton.

THEODORE NORRIS GOBLE, Arlington, N. J. (26874). Son of Albert and Sadie Elizabeth (Norris) Goble; grandson of Daniel Whiteman and Ann (Low) Goble; great-grandson of Thomas and Matsemire (Green) Goble; great-great-grandson of Morris Green, private, Captain Lamb's Company, New York Artillery on Quebec Expedition, pensioned.

Note: Colonel John Lamb was leader of the 2nd Continental Artillery Regiment and participated in the December 1775 Battle of Quebec

My wife is a descendant of Morris GREEN of Orange County, NY, who was born in 1751 and died 1801. Per the attached information, you will see that his family appears alongside many of the names in your family in the Goshen Presbyterian Church records, so I am wondering if he might be a son of John (d. 1785) and Patience Green of Walkill, NY and a brother to the Ebenezer, John, Israel and Daniel that you mention on your website. Do you know of anyone in your branch of the family that has submitted their DNA to Ancestry.Com? I am in contact with a fellow whose wife is supposedly a descendant of Daniel Green and Mary Gillson, and her DNA matches that of my sister-in-law's on Ancestry DNA. We have both checked our DNA matches to the Greenes of Kent County, RI, and while my sister-in-law has 32 matches and his wife has 16 matches, none of them are in common, so I am beginning to seriously question the claims that we are somehow related to Gen. Nathanael Greene.
