Dear NORMA,
It is definitely snail mail to send you my great "find". One is 5 pages, written in gorgeous
handwriting from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Office of the Secretary, Revolutionary War Service of JOHN ALLEN MCELWAIN signed and sealed by the Secretary in 1901. It is copies of entries from some book describing his 8 periods of service during the war.
The other paper is an application to the G.A.R.(DAR OR SAR?). It is signed by GEORGE W MCELWAIN. It gives his age, town of birth, occupation and says he served as a private in Co K 24 Regiment of Massachusetts Vols for 3 years. It is dated 1884.
I think it is pretty good stuff. In the same packet was a clipping describing JOHN A MCELWAIN, the Pastor
of Clarendon Church. (The family seems to be either Episcopal or Presbyterian. Let me know more.) And, also, there was a check for $8 signed by DORIS MCELWAIN on The Vienna Trust Company bank.
I found these papers in the secret compartment of an old desk about 10 years ago. I didn't know it had a secret compartment until a guest who knew old
furniture whacked it in a particular spot and it popped open.
The desk must have belonged to MARY DELANO MCELWAIN (1865-1936) who married my gg uncle WALTER SCOTT WADSWORTH (1860-1921). I think her
father was GEORGE W MCELWAIN.
MARY DELANO MCELWAIN went by the name of MAY and was quite "pleasingly plump" as you can see by her picture. I do have pictures and am attaching a nice one. I don't know anything else about the family though.
Here's some miscellaneous information on these people:

My personal connection to the MCELWAIN'S of Palmer & Thorndike, Mass. is by marriage only. My KEITH'S lived on the MCELWAIN property in Thorndike for 3 generations. My 80 year old grandfather lived there and actually worked in that cemetery as a boy tending the graves and mowing the lawn with his father. I was there this past summer and just wanted to pass this MCELWAIN info onto others...
