My Lamontagne Family

This is my Lamontagne family beginning with the first immigrant, Francois Bacquet dit Lamontagne who arrived in New France as a soldier in the Carignan Regiment in 1665.

A brief biography of our first ancestor

Francois was born in a small town called Montjoie in the southwestern part of France, to Renaud Bacquet and Jeanne Montus (Monsus). At age 18, he answered the call to serve his country . France at the time was involved in several areas that had a need for soldiers, and our ancestor, Francois, found himself as a member of the Carignan Regiment commissioned to New France in order to eliminate the Iroquois, who were a constant threat to the new colonists. It is during this time that he adopted the dit name "Lamontagne". There were 4 soldiers who used the surname "Lamontagne", but our ancestor was definitely of the Bacquet family, and in the service of the Company de Monteil aka Poitou. After his tour of duty, Francois decided to remain in New France.

MIGRATION
This Lamontagne seem to have moved from Quebec City, to St. Michel de Bellechasse-- Durantaye, Beaumont area. When the Lamontagne line merged with the Gosselin/Godbout line in 1776, they simply moved across the channel from St. Laurent in the Isle of Orleans to the southern coast of the St. Lawrence River. They remained there for several generations, until Odelon married in Sorel in 1863, and raised children both there and in Rhode Island. Some of the family worked around the mills in the Blackstone Valley area of RI and Ma., and most of Odelon's siblings remained in Canada. Today, there are many descendants of this line in RI, Ma, NH, and Me.

Notes for ELPHEGE LAMONTAGNE:
see bio folder for notes on my beloved "Pepere". Learned loving companionship, quiet appreciation of nature, and love of music from him. I proudly display his elaborate hand-made baptismal gown, made by his mother and her sisters, who were dressmakers by trade. I also have his tambourine from which he received so much enjoyment, along with his "sweet potatos". He inherited his love of music from his mother, and a wonderful singing voice. He passed down his appreciation and love of music, but only one of his great-grandchildren has the musical talent. I like to think that my Pepere is enjoying his great-grandson's music, and that it will continue on through the generations.

Notes for CHRISTIANA HOGUE:
see bio folder for a view of "my first teacher of the lessons of life" in my young life. She lived with us for my whole life until she died. Formed very close familial relationships, assumed "second mother" role in my life. She was the one family member who handed down family stories with pride.
Christiana had 8 pregnancies. 1 child died at age 12, another at age 2 or 4, and 1 miscarriage and 1 stillborn, or 2 miscarriages. She said she had 4 out of 8 who lived to adulthood, half of her children, and that was the average for that day and age, so she was still a lucky woman.

This child died at age 2 or 4. I think (note from author, Ilene) it was a boy, age 4, but my memory is fuzzy. Baby's mother found him (her) lifeless in the crib, with no apparent previous illness. My grandmother told me she was close to insane for a long period of time, sitting by the crib and rocking. She thinks she had a nervous breakdown, and finally pulled out of it to care for her other children.

vii. MARIE CHRISTIANA "KYENNE" LAMONTAGNE, b. April 03, 1902; d. App age 12.
Notes for MARIE CHRISTIANA "KYENNE" LAMONTAGNE:
"Kyenne" came from younger siblings mispronouncing Marie Christiana.
She always knew she would die at a young age. She spent her life preparing for her death. Her mother was devoted to her, and used to tell her stories about a wonderful heaven that she would be going to, and the happiness in store for her. She helped make her own burial dress. When she died, the dress had to be cut in the back to fit her, since due to her illness, she was too big to fit into it.
