Notes for JEAN BAPTISTE LAMERE: I have a photo of the headstones of J B and son William and family taken when I visited in 2001 in Sorel. The stones are immediately on the right as you enter the cemetary. I found no others of the same immediate family. I plan to write to the parish to find out where the stone of his brother, Joseph, is. They died very close together in time, and were both buried in that parish. I suspect the cemetary was moved from nearer the Church. Perhaps the stones were lost, or destroyed, or were just wooden markers that may not have stood the test of time.

Notes for WILLIAM LAMERE:
I have photo of the headstone in Sorel taken on my trip there in 2001. Next to the headstone of John Baptiste Lamere. They are located just as you enter the cemetary, on the right. My feeling is that this was not the original place. Other stones of people in the family who were buried in the same parish, were not found. Perhaps the cemetary was moved.

Occupation: farmer in Sorel
Notes for REINE LAGIMODIERE:
First born of her family, the first white child born in the NW Terretories.
Reine means queen and she was named after the Feast of the 3 Kings, Jan 6.
The journal "Le Manitoba" of Jan 10, 1884, mentions the 77th anniversary of Reine Lagimodiere living at her daughter's home, Mme Petrin. In the Sep 1, 1901 issue it is mentioned that Mme. Catherine Lamaire, spouse of Michel Petrin, passed away at the age of 79 yrs and 9 mths.
After the 1826 flood at Red River, Joseph and Reine and their 2 children left Manitoba to go back to Sorel, and they lived in Sorel until Joseph died in 1858. Then Reine went to Woonsocket to live with her daughter Catherine. In 1876, Reine returned to Red River where she died May 27, 1894 in Manitoba.
(Her half sister married to Brussel left in 1826 also)
There is a scrip application of Marie Anne Monet that states that Reine and Michel Monet were her parents. There are other reports that Reine may have had a child out of wedlock before her marriage to Joseph. It is very controversial because of the dates involved and of Reine's age when she married Joseph. If there had been a previous marriage, it would be those dates that the records would have burned in a fire in Manitoba.

Notes for CHRISTIANA HOGUE:
see bio folder for a view of the "my first real teacher of the lessons of life" in my young life. Lived with author's parents until she died. Formed very close familial relationships, assumed "mother" role in author's life. The one family member who handed down family stories with pride.
Christiana had 8 pregnancies. 1 child died at age 12, another at age 2 or 4, and 1 miscarriage and 1 stillborn, or 2 miscarriages. She said she had 4 out of 8 who lived to adulthood, half of her children, and that was the average for that day and age, so she was still a lucky woman.

So many wonderful happy memories, recorded elsewhere, and the reason I wish everyone could truly know the blessings of knowing a loving grandparent.

Notes for BABY LAMONTAGNE:
This child died at age 2 or 4. I think (note from author, Ilene) it was a boy, age 4, but my memory is fuzzy. Baby's mother found him (her) lifeless in the crib, with no apparent previous illness. My grandmother told me she was close to insane for a long period of time, sitting by the crib and rocking. She thinks she had a nervous breakdown, and finally pulled out of it to care for her other children.

vii. MARIE CHRISTIANA "KYENNE" LAMONTAGNE, b. April 03, 1902; d. App age 12.
Notes for MARIE CHRISTIANA "KYENNE" LAMONTAGNE:
The name "Kyenne" came from younger siblings mispronouncing Marie Christiana. She always knew she would die at a young age. She spent her life preparing for her death. Her mother was devoted to her, and used to tell her stories about a wonderful heaven that she would be going to, and the happiness in store for her. She helped make her own burial dress. When she died, the dress had to be cut in the back to fit her, since due to her illness, she was too big to fit into it.
