August 5, 1985 A beautiful baby girl was born into this world. Her parents, Gloria and Gary, named her La Tanya. La Tanya means Princess (That's me) . August 13, 1999 She entered High School at L.W. Higgins High School . September 11, 1999 She joined ROTC (reserved officer training core) April 6, 2000 La Tanya made the Dance Team for her school, L.W. Higgins and became a Diamond Dancer. It wasn't easy, but she made it through the first year and tried her best. Dance team was a lot different from cheerleading and majorettes (my previous activities), but it became something that she loved to do. At first, it wasn't easy getting along with the other members because everyone had made the dance team with a friend including LaTanya (my best friend Randi also made the team). It took some time, but dance team, became like a second family. June of 2000 La Tanya survived her first dance camp, (UDA-universal dance association). She also graduated from Leadership school that summer( a mini boot camp for ROTC). Leadership was a big accomplishment. It took discipline, leadership, and will power to pass. Not everyone did. August 16, 2000 LaTanya became a flight sergeant in ROTC, which was a big deal for her. It gave her responsibility and a bit of power in ROTC. Because of this new position, she became more involved in ROTC and it became more important to her. June 23, 2001 It was LaTanya's second time going to dance team. All of her hard work had paid off when she was chosen for the American All Star Dance Team. Becoming an All Star dancer was a true accomplishment. She finally felt like she had improved as a dancer. That same summer, she made the National Honor Roll and her bio was published in the honor roll book. She was also chosen to be the Senior Enlisted Advisor for ROTC, which was a much bigger job than being a flight sergeant was. As an American All Star, she was able to go on a trip to Rome, Italy. November 17, 2001 LaTanya left for Italy to perform in the Goodwill performance in a cultural exchange trip for the American All Star Dancers. Italy was an incredible experience. She got to meet the pope while she was there. February 3, 2002 LaTanya performed in the Superbowl. It was a dream come true. She got to meet Mariah Carey, Patti Labelle, Paul McCarthy , and George Bush! MAY 3, 2002 LaTanya was awarded the Military Order Of the Purple Heart. Through ROTC and dance team, she learned that you really can do anything you set your mind to if you set goals and work hard to reach them. to be continued..... |
